Whatever Happened To Specialized Smartweld?

Does anyone have the inside scoop as to why Specialized dumped Smartweld technology? I remember it being on a few bikes between 2014 - 2016, but it disappeared after that without any explanation. POOF!

I thought it made sense as there was a good deal of surface area touching.

At one time I was lusting pretty hard for a 2016 Allez Comp in polished aluminum.

still on the website. My 2018 Allez Elite has the smart weld tech. People sometimes mistake it for carbon because its really clean. Most bike people know its not carbon but the non cycling folks don't.

this bike also has the weld still.

I might have misinterpreted your question but I think its still going on.

Are there other companies using this technology? I like old steel frames in that the welds are so beautiful and clean. Even quality Taiwanese aluminum frames of the early 2000s showed great care in manufacturing. Then companies outsourced to China and the weld joints began to look terrible.

Cycling Plus road tested the Smartweld Allez couple o'years back. Their ride description sure sounded like 'planing' to me.

The Allez Sprint is a seriously desirable bike. A great way to get a very capable racing bike for a reasonable price.

Maybe better now, but the earlier smart-weld was butt-ugly, with the weld sticking out 1/2" away from the joining tube.

Your instincts were right though IMO.

There seems to be far less enthusiasm from Specialized to spruik that they use "Smartweld", than was the case a few years ago and there are less bikes that Specialized use it on these days.

Smartweld pushed the BS needle off the gauge. Only reason for it is to reduce weld time.
