National Ride Your Bike To Work Day

Friday May 17, 2019 is ride your bike to work day.

https://bikeleague.org/content/bike-...dates-events-0

Some of you are fortunate enough to be able to do it on a regular basis. It's impractical for me as I am 15 miles and some bad roads away. I am going to do it this year though. That day also happens to be National Wear Your Life Jacket to Work day. So I am going to be bicycling to work in a life jacket this year! How many of you will pedal in because it's National Ride Your Bike To Work Day?

I'll likely be on vacation that day. A three-day bike vacation. Will that count?

I did my bike-train-bike commute this morning. Just got in the office 10 min. ago.

I plan to; indeed, I took advantage of this being "bike to work" week and rode in this morning - the first time since October 2015. Might also do it tomorrow, depending on how badly I handle the climb home.

What we need around here in order for people to be receptive to the idea is some good late spring weather. Still feels like April around here.

Lot of crappy weather here in Philly. Sun went away Saturday afternoon and finally came out today. It's going to rain again tonight, and likely Thursday and Friday. At one point we had rain 9 out of 10 days. Sunday and Monday got up to only the 50s. Normal high is low 70s. The crazy thing is that for the last few days it's been at or near 80 in Missoula, MT. Even Logan Pass in Glacier National Park was warmer.

Yeah, it had been warm and a bit humid a few weeks ago, but lately it has been starting in the low 50s and only climbing to the low 60s. Rode in with a jacket this morning, even. Supposedly today is supposed to get up to 70, but we shall see.

How 'bout I do my ride a day early? Forecast here is for rain on Friday, and I HATE cleaning my bike after a rain! Besides, were are just now getting into 'riding weather' here in northern Ohio, and unfortunately, the County roads people haven't had a chance to fill the Winter potholes due to the rainiest Spring ever... Heck, we've been averaging 15°F BELOW normal all Spring (thanks 'Global Warming' :/ ), and the leaves aren't even fully out on the trees yet on May 15th!!!!

Bike to Work Day, actually. Participated in the event for a number of years and tried to ride to work on that day even if unable to be involved in the activities around it.
But, can't Bike to Work since I retired.

I can't say I envy a century as a commute, nor would work be happy if I left my test vehicle sitting in my driveway. Not to mention, risking a ticket on the Interstate is saner than taking the one non-limited access road I could even navigate to work

Today's the official day, so I rode in on my 20" folder. Did Wednesday and Thursday as well, really.

Not having done that in several years now (2015!) I'm rather out of shape. There's two hills home out of work in close succession - they're mild (not many feet gained from what elevation maps tell me), and I handled them alright when I rode a bunch but man if they did not gas me. Fortunately there's side roads where I can turn in and catch my breath. Did better Thursday than Wednesday, so today I'm going to see if I can tackle at least one of them non-stop to its peak.

Picked up some swag socks on Tuesday from one of the May is Bike Month stands on the way to work and sported them on my commute today.

I try to commute Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday because of distance and work schedule. It is cold and rainy so I wimped out. I'm tired too. My commute is 52 miles round trip and I had a massive headwind going home yesterday.

Kudos to all who rode today!

It's funny, I thought the real day was yesterday, which is when City of Los Angeles Metro did their Commuter Bike Pit Stop in front of City Hall. I don't go that way anymore though.

Oddly, I did ride yesterday, and today. Yesterday sucked, big time - freak Southern California rain storm, with real rain. (Big droplets and stuff, not just a light mist or morning marine layer.) But I needed to drop a car off at a shop and told my wife to take my car, and I would ride in to work. Waking up to rain was not what I expected. I think it was a southern storm though, seemed warm, at least.

Today was a regular, sunny SoCal ride. Saw a Least Bittern by the LA River, and the typical egrets and cormorants. Back to pick up the car tonight.

Changed the trip to an overnighter because of the chance of storms this afternoon/evening. (Trying to cook in camp when there is no picnic shelter is not fun.) So I rode to work but totally forgot it was BTW Day until I saw a post on BF a bit before I was preparing to leave. Missed the mass ride into town from near my house. Had to make the 1.75 mile commute on my own.
