I wouldn't call cutting resistance a hidden flaw that's not obvious to the public, though.

Now, if someone discovered that taking an .009" metal shim and laser cutting it into a particularly shaped hook and inserting it into just the right spot would release the latching mechanism, IMO privately informing the company of how and that you would release details on the flaw to the public in two months if they didn't fix it is more responsible than publishing a how-to video with instructions and dimensions the next day. Hmm, probably wouldn't get you as many youtube views, though.

PS - IIRC, Ottolock didn't accept LPL's initial findings graciously. In fact, again IIRC, they made some disparaging comments directed at him. At that point, all is fair.
That's pretty damn reasonable. I think the problem with this would be defining the line between so obvious it should be announced and not likely to get independently discovered in two months, but your examples are well-chosen.

You've certainly convinced me that I don't know enough about the subject to really weigh in.

Was in my local lbs today and asked for a popular brand of bike lock lube that I had been using. Was told they no longer carried it because of health hazard, It gets into your blood through your skin and causes problems. I didn't find anything on line, so I am curious about this. I'm not going to name the brand because I don't want to be sued, but does anybody else know of this problem?

I think there are organic not pteroleum based bike lock lubes, (no, not olive oil) that are being marketed specifically for bicycle lock lube purposes.

Or any other tumbler key of the same diameter, by filing off the locating tab on the end of it - a few seconds rubbing a tumbler key on the pavement gets you a key that today still fits various bike locks, vending machines, payphones...

Refined snake oil?

This would be a different application than lubricant for any other mechanical outdoor lock how?

This one gets it!

But I guess if it has to be explained, then it's not really that funny.

LPL should rebrand to LockBustingLawyer.

But the title of the thread should really be "this is why you should make busting your lock as difficult, long, and loud as possible for the thief"

In a game where the thief can use very quiet snips on a cable lock or has to use a nut splitter and risk losing an eye to bust my folding lock, I'll take that chance.
