Poop pills: The next banned PED?

This is a pretty interesting news item. Elite endurance athletes seem to be more likely than the general population to carry a species of bacteria in their guts that ferments lactate and converts it to propionate which can in turn be absorbed into the blood and used as an energy source.

this was an interesting read, but what I found most disturbing was the commitment to this scientist:

In the study, researchers collected stool samples from 15 elite runners for five days

This information doesn't even hint of doing anything for endurance. Ignore.

Oh lighten up.

It's a study that shows that physical activity can affect changes in the gut microbiota. That's interesting.

The rest (whether or not that change could be adaptive) is speculative and uses a convenient animal model that isn't really ideal to answer questions about endurance. Mice aren't built for endurance.

It might be interesting to look at stool from animals that are adapted for endurance to see if they grow veillonella species in their guts. A clinical trial in humans would also be interesting.

Flatulence is not an issue for me... and my own stools, sir, are perfect. They are gigantic and have no more odor than a hot biscuit.

There are various lines of solid research linking the gut microbiome to obesity, blood pressure, anorexia, depression, physical activity and a number of other physical and psychological manifestations. Not surprising, given that bacterial cells in our gut outnumber all the cells in our bodies by a factor of ten or more. This is an area of which we are only scratching the surface.

Beano contains the enzyme alpha-galactisidase. There is no charcoal in Beano
