Hello. I ride with old school "toe clip" cages and old, repurposed 12 Wide New Balance running shoes. I figured there have to be better shoes specifically made for bicycling, even for guys that still use toe clips. There are, of course, but I can't find any in WIDE sizes. Anybody have any advice as to where to find such shoes? Any recommendations for good ones?

I use lake and really like them. You can buy many places online. Sidi is another option but a bit more spendy.

I am sure there are more but these are what I know of.

I have 2 pairs of lake and i have E3 width. No issues


i am only referencing clipless shoes. I cant speak on non-cleated

I have some Shimano shoes in wide fitting. Again, designed for clipless, of course, but I assume that any mountain bike shoe would work for you.

Maybe not cycling shoes, but I have wider feet and like a wide toe box, kind of like Altra or Merrell. Especially my running shoes have alternate lacing. I skip the first crossover. Gives a bunch of extra room.

I've used Shimano SH-M087, XC-7 and Lake MXZ303, all in wide.

The Shimano's feel noticeably wider and are generally more comfortable. Of the 2 pair of Shimano's the 087 were the wider of the 2 styles.

For road riding, I have clip in shoes so that doesn't help you much. They have a very stiff sole to them.
But for bikepacking on my single bike and tandem, we use flat pedals which are similar to cages like you ride. Riding like this gives you a lot of good options. For my wife, we went to several places (Academy, Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc...) and tried on hiking shoes to find a good fit that was light.

I share your pain, and don't really have anything to offer beyond that.

FWIW, I have decent luck with Five Ten Freeriders that are a full size up. OOTO, the Freerider Elements in that same size are too narrow. It's all hit or miss, and frustrating.

Unfortunately the genius is not my own. All my shoes, including my wide width running shoes get this lacing. I am hoping this pair of shoes stretch out a little, I find them still tight, but this pair is only 3 days old and more importantly sturdy enough for work.

Another vote for Lake, it is all I can wear. Not sure if they offer flats for toe clips...

Bontrager Flatline Mountain Shoe? Supposedly these shoes are "wide" even though they are not labeled as "wide."

I just bought a pair of Specialized shoes that come in a wide version. They are wider than the Shimanno's the replaced. Bought from the LBS. They are mountain bike shoes though. This is what I use on my road bike.

Northwave also have wide shoes, on their regular shoes, they seemed a bit wider than most shoes. They also have models that are labeled as wide.
Sidi shoes have their "Mega" sized shoes that are the wider version.

Somebody suggested using indoor soccer shoes. Do they have a solid sole that emulates a bike shoe? The person said that bicycle messengers have been known to use indoor soccer shoes. Anybody else know anything about this? Thanks.

I talked to guys at my LBS and ordered a pair of SIDI in 4E- was more than I wanted to pay but worth it as no more pain.

They are comp mtn bike shoes. I bought them from Open Road bicycles in Jacksonville, Fl. I am pretty sure if you go to Specialized's website and look under shoes, you can find them. If not, their phone number is 904-771-8830.

I have large paddle feet. Just brought myself a pair of Bont Riots. Nice wide toe box and can be moulded in the oven.
