Well, while I think you did a nice job on the wash, your ironying still needs work.

meh ... the thread makes it clear I'm not the only one that sees this behavior as ironic. Getting everybody to understand the irony isn't really the goal here - but it's helping me pass some hours while the swelling goes down in my knee and I can get back out on the roads (without a helmet dangling from my handlebars).

For the record, my whites are still a mess from 19 hours of gravel roads on Saturday ... so I won't be too quick to complement my work on the laundry.

Or when you are riding across the country and have days on empty roads in the Midwest where it's 100+ degrees. incredibly humid and there is no shade? (Think central IL farmland in late July/early August.)

Maybe I'm just weird, but I would think having a helmet on your head would be far less annoying than having one dangle on your handlebars.

I'm experienced in riding all day in high temps with no shade.

Reference: check point 3 of The DAMn, mile 187 of 242, temps over 90F with dew point close to 70* - helmet on head ... 'cause I have a helmet with good vents

Well, sorry about the knee but glad I could help out a fellow Minnesotan (former in my case) pass the time with a pointless argument.

Now onto the important point--are the gnats as bad in Minnesota this year as they have been in New England? I haven't swallowed this many bugs in decades. It's enough for me to want a helmet for my mouth.

The gnats are giving me lots of additional protein on my rides [/yuck!] - During the pre-dawn hours of The DAMn, I used my sun buff over my mouth and nose to keep the bugs out. It's a bad year!!

I can do you one better with irony. I would ask parents if they wore a helmet when they rode when fitting their kids for a free helmet for the bike helmet give-away I organized. The parents would often say no they didn't, but their kid would have to when they rode; effectively saying their kid's head was worth protecting but theirs wasn't. There were a couple of the typical fat old guys that rode dorky cruisers mentioning they might think about getting one for the next time they rode their harley, and they'd look at my funny when I mentioned they should only do that if they've got something under the helmet worth protecting.

In the 10+ years since I started the helmet give-away I've seen a bunch of kids wearing these helmets out riding around in town, and it's a rare occasion when I see the parent wearing a helmet. I guess it's just another case of parents wanting their kids to do as they say, not as they do and chalk it up to the irony of life.

What is blatantly apparent to me is this woman neither cares about her noggin nor her handlebars or she would be protecting them both with Trek's new WaveCell technology. Should she go down and those shiny chrome bars get scuffed, she has only herself to blame for not adhering to adequate safety protocols.

Also dumb - wearing a helmet but not buckling the straps - I see young boys do that all the time riding sidewalks and crossing streets. Makes me want to scream

Nearing the end of a long hot ride my wife took off her helmet and hung it on the stem (all while still pedalling).
I told her that wasn't a good idea but she ignored me. A minute later the helmet strap must have caught a spoke because she went over the handlebars like she had hit a low wall.
I had to get the car, load up the bikes and the wife and went to the hospital. Nothing was broken but she had to take a couple weeks off work to heal her shoulder.

I don't wear my helmet on long climbs. I don't care what anyone thinks about it, either. If I have to go 6mph for 2 hours, the helmet isn't doing anything but making sweat. I keep a velcro strap in my bike bag, and hang the helmet from under the saddle.

When I get to the top and it's time to descend, I put the helmet back on.

I think the only takeaway from this thread is that if you're not gonna wear your helmet, don't hang it from the bars.

Looks more aero than a stock handlebar. That must be why they do it.
