Doh!

I had to reread the OP as I thought she was operating a "baby delivery" service and putting them in the basket. Explains the belly bump now.

In ye olden days a woman would go out and hoe her potato field in the morning, have her baby during mid-day break, and finish hoeing the field by sundown. We were all tougher then but women more so.

This is only correct in the narrowest definition of the term "cyclist". Obviously, anyone that mounts a bicycle, becomes a "cyclist", in the technical/literal sense, but this conveniently ignores what is actually meant when someone uses a term like cyclist, guitarist, fisherman, plagiarist, poet, etc.etc.etc.etc.
According to this strict definition, anyone that has ever told a lie, can be permanently labelled a "liar", though that person may not actually be a liar, according to anyone that knows them.
You could argue that anyone that's ever used a soldering iron on a home project, is now a "welder", or that anyone that's ever sewn a button is now a "seamstress", yet in the real world, that person would never claim to have the knowledge or skill of an actual welder or seamstress, just because they technically engaged in the activity at a very low level.

Oh boy. Not sure about your perception there, but you are digging a bit deep with bias confirmation, that is completely off base in source.

Thanks for overanalising my comment, at least I appreciate the attention and your time? Misguided as it is...

If you race bicycles at the highest level, I’ll call you a professional cyclist. Anyone else that doesn’t get paid is just a cyclist. Since we weren’t discussing anyone that gets paid to be a cyclist, I’m not sure why this discussion is needed? Seems like common sense. This completely sidesteps the actual point I was making anyway. Cheers mate.

bias confirmation? Lol, mate, you laid out an opinion that was blatantly emotional and completely unfounded by anything revealed in the article. Since you don’t know her, her family or who she was travelling with, how did you arrive at the notion that she was simply trying to prove a point? I’m genuinely curious for an explanation on that one. Also, it’s called confirmation bias, and it’s literally what you’ve attempted to do. All I did was point out that the article can’t possibly be of any proof that she was trying to ’make a point’. So explain what is “off base in source”, because if I understand those words correctly, it describes your opinion as stated. Nice try with the fancy words though.

She rode mostly downhill(her own words)to the hospital to give birth. Very cool but it in no way makes her a ‘cyclist’ so not sure what’s up with the misleading post title.

Yeah, I take your point, it makes sense, I hadn't looked at it that way till just now, but it occurs to me that both words can fit, depending on the perspective. I'd originally typed "strictest", then changed it to narrowest. As i was seeing it, the other guy was essentially saying, (in a strictly technical sense) that merely throwing a leg over a bike instantly makes someone a "cyclist" (which it doesn't, any more than getting in a fight, makes someone an actual "fighter").
So, yeah, that could mean a very broad, sweeping, all-encompassing definition of the word 'cyclist', but at the same time, as I was seeing it, he was basically saying, "a cyclist is someone that has ever straddled a bicycle, ergo, they are by definition, a cyclist, end of story", which could also be called a very strict interpretation of the term cyclist. See what I mean?

Doesn't say anything about pedaling, therefore, just riding on a bicycle does, in fact, make one a cyclist.

"cy·clist/ˈsīkləst/ noun

1. a person who rides a bicycle."

In fact, the two are distinctly different. Someone who invests in, and put on cycling gear is vastly different from someone that uses a bike to commute from A to B.

That's dedication. I'll say that much. Hopefully, she's inspired other people, especially women in the time since she was an Mom to be and today.
