2) I just slow down for kids who are pretty clearly learning to ride. I'm not happy with the parents, who shouldn't take their kids on a MUP until they can ride in their lanes, but as for the kids themselves, I'm happy to give them the time they need to learn.
If not on a MUP, where is a kid supposed to learn how to ride in a lane? I think those parents are doing exactly the right thing as long as they do everything they can to make their kid's presence known to other cyclists. The only thing I've ever said to "correct" such parents is to tell them they didn't need to apologize because teaching kids is a big part of what the paths are for.

If someone is closing with me head-on in my own lane, I'm yelling at them to move over. They obviously don't get it for some reason, and I'm not going to wait for the light bulb to go on over their head. I don't care what the situation is, I think intentionally riding at their bike at any distance close enough to send some sort of message is a really, really bad idea.

Hey folks, the autocensor is either getting happy again or we're intentionally masking things. Don't mask and try less flammable words that don't require flushing?

Or give a two handed waive. You do wave, don't you? I did an up and back on the GAP starting last week. My left wrist got sore from waving. It go so painful that I had to switch to the head nod.

I am flattered you thought I was so young.

Funny, I though you said “Heading to the bar” when you passed me.

Besides all that, I think it makes a more effective point if you take your hands off and cover up your eyes as you ride by the hands-off cyclist.

My opinion concerning this topic is the same as that in the thread "Cyclist's safety...what to do" and " How do you deal with Harrassment"

Seriously, I tried to get my wife to cover her mouth, but she wasn't quick enough on the uptake. It wasn't that the guy was just riding no-handed; he had them clasped behind his back, nose up in the air and looked so smug I couldn't resist the impulse.

When did we become such busy-bodies, always checking up to make sure others are behaving in a manner that we approve.

Good Lord this is America.

IDK. I don't see a problem with trying to educate people. When I was touring last year a couple of people who were on an organized, supported tour buzzed me and spoke up just as they were basically in my ear. Unnerved me due to the setting and somewhat hazardous conditions existing at the time. I suggested that they give an advance warning as a courtesy, in only because if spooking me causes me to swerve, I and my fully-loaded bike are going to win that battle. I told one guy that I was riding a semi and he a Mazda Miata.

Perhaps ironically, I got yelled at by a salmon this spring. I pulled all the way over to the curb on the right and stopped. Wasn't intending on saying a word and just let him pass. He told me I could have moved out into traffic so he could have hugged the curb. Not only was that ludicrous in and of itself, his salmon buddy was behind him was and already occupying that spot. I would have had to go out near the double yellow line to safely avoid both of them.

Your second statement answers the first. We've ALWAYS been a bunch of busy-bodies making sure that others behave in a manner that we approve. As evidence, I give you blue laws.

That may be so. But I live in the Great American West, the final frontier in a manner of speaking. Here in the West, once upon a time, laissez-faire was the law of the land.

Not any more. Now we seem to live in a country of "If I don't like it, then nobody else should do it either."

I think the OP was riding on a MUP and the 'no-hands' rider likely noodling along at 20kph, not descending a hill in the wind at 60kph.

Like I said, a crash while riding with no hands is rare and the likelihood of having a crash just as the OP is riding by even lower.

Much ado about nothing. You're far more likely to have a problem passing a walker who decides to change direction as you go by or from an animal.
