Is this carbon steerer tube road worthy?
 

After seeing the Bianchi steer fork failure on youtube I decided to check my commuter/training bike. A bit concerned with what I saw down the tube.
The area showing the splinters is approximately 5 inches from the top of the steer tube. That area sits squarely inside the head tube and well away from the head set bearings.

Could anyone give some suggestions and advise? The bike is a 2015 CAAD 10. Thanks in advance.

Looks like the tube was finished well up to that point. Take it to a Cdale dealer and have them look at it, and possibly call Cdale to get a more informed view of it.

anyway, that area looks shoddy, should be smooth. I've never seen inside of any carbon tube look that bad

To me it looks like the manufacturer gets a rough finish inside the steer tube, maybe from when they pull it off a mandrel, and then they bore it smooth for the part where the compression nut goes.

So, I don't see a problem. Carbon often looks rough on one side of the layup. It's just a factor of how it's molded. The top part is a result of machining it smooth in some way.

If you saw fibers splintering away from a part of the layup that was otherwise smooth, that would be cause for concern. If you tapped that steer tube and it sounded dead halfway down, that would be cause for concern.

Yeap. Head tube. Brain spasm after looking down the steer.
