I put the odds of anyone actually saying anything new and rational on this subject at exactly 0%, and am just hanging around for the jokes and the nuttiness at this point.
That's the third extended gush on the Denali, and this one includes a video of a guy buying one of the last ones remaindered at $99.

This thread proves one thing
some people like and enjoy tinkering with things and making something work
some people buy something new and take it to a shop if it ever breaks

Again, you are simply wrong. Lots of folks like nice stuff and enjoy working on it. Those folks don't enjoy "tinkering" with junk. If you have a job and can't ride nice bikes, something is wrong with you. I'm obviously not talking about the latest new stuff. People give away 8,9,10 speed legit bikes and quality components. There is no reason to mess with BSO junk unless someone is too lazy to learn how to find and maintain better stuff.

Tinkering with bikes is a chore I have to do. Riding bikes is something I love to do. If I've got to spend a lot of time tinkering with my bikes, then I have less time to ride.
And yeah, I take things to the shop when they break. Being a good cyclist doesn't make me a good mechanic.
Most newbie bicyclists aren't looking for projects, a lot of them get discouraged the first time they get a flat.
Sorry, I don't buy either the "they're all pos" or "they're all just fine with a little work".

I enjoy working on bikes as long as they good quality bikes with good quality components, but I hate POS department store bikes and I would never want to work on one. Department store bikes are not worth investing time/money into.

I had a feeling the OP was one who would post a question and never show up again
Having said that, while my primary bikes are a Trek Domane and Surly Disc Trucker, I actually have a Walmart bike that gets ridden once or twice a year. About 7 years ago for our 30th anniversary, our kids bought my wife and I a tandem bike. My wife isn't a cyclist so this is the first/only bike she'd ride. At the time, our kids didn't know much about bikes and, significantly, didn't really have any money, so Walmart it was. My wife isn't comfortable riding on roads with traffic, so once or twice a year (her limit based on interest), we'll take the tandem out to a bike path for a 10 or 15 mile ride ... flat path, no road traffice, etc. The bike actually works for those purposes and it would have been kind of a waste to spend much more for a tandem bike.

Funny that you would use the term bso. It's too damn elitist for me.
BTW, I'm pretty sure the percentage of the population that actually enjoys tinkering with bikes is in the low single digits and much smaller than the number of people who just want to hop on a working bike and ride. You made a point that was too obvious to be a point. I also think wm bikes aren't generally being marketed to people who want to tinker.
indyfabz might have some insight into bears' opinions of bikes.

No one's alleging that they're exclusively woods crappers. Just that there are bears that crap in woods. Nonetheless, I look forward to Smokey's potty pic.
More importantly, does the Peloton husband crap in the woods?

For the money, one can buy a CV road bike for the price of a Walmart/Target road bike.
For the money, one can buy a CV straight bar / hardtail for the price of a Walmart/Target straight bar MTB looking thing.
I see Trek 820s and 850s in good shape for 75.00-100.00 that in very rideable shape. I can’t see the appeal in buying a bicycle from a big box store. I did my first riding on a 1991 Trek 1200. I paid 240.00 for it and it was in very good shape. I now have a nice Domane SL5 but that Trek 1200 can do everything the Domane does.

With temperatures above 80F and sunshine, one way to get exercise and abide by the social distancing directives during this Covid-19 pandemic is to pedal your bicycle around the streets, with little automobile traffic today due to folks staying home and sheltering in place.
Stay healthy, stay home if you can, and get outside to (EXERCISE) walk, run, or ride your bicycle and be vigilant and mindful of the social distancing directives.

You guys should have saw my neighbor on her to small Huffy early last summer. I thought she lost her mind.
Brand new at Walmart, $105. I could have snagged a older Trek 4300 for $35 at a thrift, it needed work, but for the kind of riding she would be doing it would have not taken much to make it road worthy for her.
