Nice catch!

Bmach 12-18-19 11:45 PM

With my luck this year it would have been my tire that caught it. Glad that’s all that happened for you.

Amazing. I've been looking at that thing several times today and could not for the life of me come even close to knowing that it was (or that it actually was something). And then, someone here identifies it as if they carry around a handful of them in their pocket. The knowledge base at this forum knows no bounds.

I am not worthy.

sure you are. just keep this one in your back pocket. it may come up in a convo. I have a 2nd job at a home improvement center. 1st time someone was looking for one of those, I had no idea what they were talking about.

I dunno, by the roughness of the finish it looks more hot dip galvanized to me

Olefeller77 12-19-19 06:52 PM

Sure enough a fence staple . I grew up having no love for them . Try driving one in a cured hedge (osage orange) fence post. All the fences on the farm I grew up on were hedge posts with those staples.

I just thought it was a large bent nail. I live in the city, seems kind of random. Something else I have to worry about hitting.

Those are not usually used by homeowners, but are common in construction as a generic fastener. They used to be used to attach electric wire, are used to fasten stuff like the tar-paper or waterproof wrap to walls, maybe roofing felt (not the preferred method), sometimes lo-budget stucco guys use those to attach the wire prior to stucco application (also not an approved method). And as a common name applies, they can be used to attach metal wire screening as fencing or on a frame to make chicken coop, pigeon coop, or cage for other types of animals.

Wanna really worry about something? They can also be made into caltrops.

Not used for electric fencing -- they short it out.

Osage... great wood for making recurve bows!

Don't know that I'd want to keep one in my back pocket. Forget about it and sit down--real PIA!!
