New Cateye Luxeon LED lights
Cateye has made two new Luxeon Star LED lights, the Double Shot and Triple Shot.

Looks like they are rather expensive. This is from the bikemagic.com site.
We can't decide if it looks more like Johnny Five or a Martian war machine, but either way, this is Cateye's new Triple Shot light. It uses SLED technology, like the Exposure and Solidlights units, with three lamps giving a claimed output equivalent to a 35-40W halogen lamp. Proprietary lenses give a spot from the centre lamp and a flood from the side ones and it's all housed in a funky cast aluminium body with cooling fins all over it. The battery is a 2.6Ah NiMH unit and you get a remote on/off switch and brackets to suit standard and oversized bars. Claimed run time is over three hours, weight is 710g and price is £350. Importers Zyro say it'll be available in August. There'll also be a Double Shot with two LEDs, a helmet mount and a 5hr run time at £275. Details will appear at www.zyro.co.uk as they become available.

The whole point of LED lights is long runtime on standard batteries. These are really short-lived, with proprietary batteries? Silly.

For the same price, you can buy a niterider or light & motion with 150% to 200% more battery life and TWICE the brightness.
3.3 hours of brightness with 20watts halogen equiv light? Pfft.. THIS system from BLT gets a whopping 15 hours of run time at the same brightness.
This one uses a 12 watt LED to get HID type brightness for 6 hours of battery life.
Both weigh in at almost a half pound LESS than the cateye system.

The Cateye prices are not out yet, but the BLT BLT ENDURO-RAY 20 watt job is $450, I'll bet the Cateye will be less then a 4th of that, probably around $80 to $120.

Luxeon Star 1W LEDs are pretty darned expensive by themselves. The 3W and 5W Luxeons are even more expensive. They are getting cheaper by the month as they make more of them for more products. The retail price on these lights is still way too much, but the next generation of Luxeon based headlights should get cheaper. I see products like this as for the people that have to have the latest equipment, no matter what, and will pay the premium for it.
The only real advantage I can see over a halogen bulb system is that the bulb will not burn out in the middle of a ride, but at that price point you could easily carry a spare bulb, or even a spare light assembly mounted on the bike.
I would like to see a generator based Luxeon unit in the near future (if it doesn't already exist).

My light & motion uses proprietary bulbs (I've checked) and they run like 18 bucks a pop. Since I have dual lamps, if I drop the assembly during transport or I wipe out, that's over 40 bucks plus shipping, EACH TIME it happens. I can imagine if I were mtb'ing at night, I'd have to carry 80 bucks worth of bulbs on me.
So they won't break. But they also get a little more run time. A 2hr bright halogen vs. a 6hr bright LED is a huge thing.
