Map My Ride
I have been biking for over a year using Map My Ride, typically I ride the same route, there is a lake near my work that is 5 miles around. I typically buzz around two or three times. If I go around twice it has always logged 10.09 to 10.14 miles. This past week it has logged 9.02 to 9.21 at a slower rate.
I rode 2150 miles last year and I wanted to ride 2500 miles this year however with this 10% loss it is going to be more difficult. If anyone in San Diego sees this post I ride around Lake Miramar Has anyone else noticed a change with their phone apps? |
I have noticed similar issues lately with MMR losing GPS signal and sometimes 'drawing' a straight line from my start to finish, which is really frustrating.
I chalked it up to the carbon fiber shell on my velomobile, but it's too cold to go ride my recumbent so I don't really want to test it out. It's supposed to be near 50F here this weekend, so I may go ride a few segments and get back to you. I'm a bit curious now, since I'm not the only one. FWIW, it seems like MMR was working mostly fine for the last few months, even inside the shell of the velo, so it may be related to the last update. I know in the past, they have changed some setting where if your phone is in power saving mode, it would not record unless you left it on completely (screen and everything, which really drains the battery). They may have done something like this again, but I don't run my phone in power saving mode, but there may be some other setting that has changed. The tricky part is that it could be the app that has 'updated', or the OS on your phone. ETA: On my android phone, there is a setting to tell the phone NOT to put an app to sleep. I added MMR to the exemption list. I'll see if that makes a difference. |
I got a speed sensor because GPS speed was too varied due to signal strength. Not sure if it corrects for distance, but in my mind....if my speed is accurate and ride time is accurate, my distance should also be accurate.

Probably a different problem, but I have a battery charger that interferes with my phone's GPS. I've stopped carrying that particular charger on rides.

This one is pretty amusing. It's been happening a lot more lately (as in, the last ~2 weeks). Look ma, I can fly!

The changes noted are likely a result of Global Worming.
