New York lock m18-wl (EU only)
I've been looking at bike locks, and like the M18-WL. Anyone know why this is available in Europe only, and not available in the United States?
I'd post links, but can't because I don't have 10 points yet.

Sometimes things are spec'd for different markets based on need or on what U.S. distributors are willing to take in. Our shop had a helmet we really loved but it was European only and the distributor was thinking it wouldn't sell and would only take it in if we committed to 100k helmets and we said let's do it and that helmet is now a top seller and a lot of shops are carrying it (which is good because it was a big risk). Many shops wouldn't be able to do that and distributors don't want to hold on to a ton of product nobody wants.
If you want good security I would check out the Granit X-Plus 540 lock from ABUS. It is a much higher quality lock and lightweight as well. Many locks companies use cheap steel and poor practices in hardening and tempering the steel so they use a thicker heavier lock to make it seem stronger. If you use high quality virgin steel and treat it properly you can have a stronger lighter lock also making parts of the lock less brittle so when people try different attacks like twisting your lock will bend rather than break. Also a square shackle is harder to cut so that helps as well in security
Also you can get other locks that are keyed alike to that X-Plus key number so family and friends can have locks that are on that same key or you can have multiple locks which use the same key.
I would personally fuggetabout Kryptonite and anyone that believes thicker is better because well it is thicker so that has to be better. Thicker can be better but if it is cheap steel that is easy breakable or cut, it doesn't really matter.

Thickness
Thanks for the response.
Here's the thing: The Granite X Plus 540 has a 13 mm shackle, and a 3/5 from Art, but the M-18WL has a shackle of 18 mm.
I want to minimize the chance of having someone use an angle grinder on my bike, and a thicker shackle seems like potentially a good way to help make that happen.
I also like that Kryptonite has an Anti-Theft Protection Program, all of which is why I'm leaning towards Kryptonite.
If I'm overlooking something, please do share. Thanks.

I understand your reservations i have an Abus 53 london lock its 13mm i've had it about 12 years. i now also have the forghettabout it mini just bought it not tried it yet. thing is anything below 16mm i understand a bolt cutter can cut it. Failing that they will use angle grinders which will get through it. I'd rather have the thicker lock any day then a 13mm. At the end of the day the angle grinder is the one we need protection from
