covid is causing me stress. i have a nice Lemond 853 steel needs love.
is it even a thinkable task to begin sanding the frame for the what if?

Perhaps...
I just finished sand blasting, bluing and clear coating my FG frame but that was a different grade of steel so in your case ???
There may be some 853 experts out there who can weigh in on the metallurgy aspect of this.

Non omnino gravis
Got the SoCal double-whammy going right now, it's been raining for 2 days straight and forecast for rain the next four. So yeah, it's bike maintenance in overdrive right now. I wish the weather were more conducive to painting, the paint I've got going is drying as slow as I've ever had paint dry... ever.

Many years ago I bought a Tange Infinity bicycle that was all white. I guess after that I had a bit of a mid-life crisis but couldn't afford to buy an Italian sports car. LOL so about 2001 I started buying Campagnolo Mirage and Veloce 9-speed components for the bike. Then I decided to strip the frame and paint it gree, white and red to represent the Italian flag colours. I'm really glad that I did because I was thrilled the way the bike came out. The fellow who saw the bike after I'd painted and reassembled it couldn't belive it was the same bike I'd bought from him.
Go for it! the rewards of doing a good repaint can last decades.

We have no idea if the finished version will look bad.
Are you taking it to a painter?
Are you having it powdercoated?
Are you doing a wet paint process at home?
Are you using spray.bike?
Are you using spray paint?
How much prep work will you do if it's a home job?
What color(s) will be used?
Pretty sure answers to all that will help others determine if the bike will look good or not.

Definitely go for it. I have an 853 Schwinn Peloton that the color was killing me. I got it with a perfect factory paint job and I stripped it right away (it was a hideous blue) It went through two different colors and full builds before I settled on gloss black. No decals except the head badge and a reynolds 853 sticker on the bottom of the seat tube. I love the way the bike looks, and couldnt be happier. The paint isn't perfect, but to me, the bike looks better than ever.
