Cleaning Berthoud bag?
any tips? leather trimmed canvas, large.
do I just take it into the shower & scrub with a nail brush? any special soap? drip dry in a ventilated spot? treat with some type of spray & leather dressing? 4 years old, but not filthy, yet! thanks |
From Acorn, who use similar materials:
For canvas: Just as you shouldn't wash fabric upholstery or leather products such as shoes, gloves or jackets, you shouldn't dry clean or use detergent on your canvas. Gentle brushing or a damp cloth is best for loose dirt. For a more thorough cleaning, use a hand sponge with a mild natural soap (not detergent) in lukewarm water. Rinse twice with clean water. For leather: A gentle leather cleaner/conditioner, like Lexol or Fiebing's, is all that's needed. Saddle soap is also a good choice. |
I live in Cambodia where it is either Hot and Dry(Dusty) or Hot and Wet(mildew). I have a bunch of Acorn bags and the main one my Randonneur front bag has gotten pretty bad. I just took it and tossed it in the washer machine. Normally I use Fels Naptha soap and a brush to clean them but that needed a good dunking. For the leather, I use Brooks proofhide every once in awhile. I do need to get some more wax and rewax the fabric.

I've got a metal frame in my bag which was a bugger to get drilled & inserted so I passed on the washer idea. with soap (not detergent!) and a small nylon brush i'm going to give it a good thrashing. I have a bit of proof-hide left over from waxing my saddle, so I may skim some on the leather when the bag air dries.
thanks for the inputs. |
