Newbie needs help :-)

Hello all
due to the current climate iv decided to take up cycling as a way of getting fit and spending some quality time with the kids. I was generously donated a bike. Please dont laugh :-) its a challenger tupli bike. Shimano build i believe. It needs some restoration and i wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction for parts? I can send pictures as im new i am unable to post on here due to being new.
it looks like it needs a new front brake cable, new handle grips, a new chain and a rear gear arm i think its called?

many thanks

chris

Welcome aboard, Chris!

I am not sure what a "challenger tupli" is, but if it is this bike ....

... you might want to reconsider spending more than a couple of dollars on it. You can get it on the road, but the odds of it making you actually like cycling are not very good, IMO.

If you're going to spend money on a bike in order to ride it and like it, spend it on something better. It doesn't need to be expensive. There are bikes out there that might look like crap, but will give you a very pleasant ride, once properly serviced.

Stores that sell these kind of bikes should be forced to ride them.
sorry Chris. Hope you can repair cheaply your self because a trip to bike mechanic going to cost more than it would be worth to me anyway. But that's up to you. Try watching some bike repair videos and maybe it won't be too bad on what the bike needs. Grips, chain and cable cheap if you do yourself but much more best to just buy something better

Any bike is good for spending quality time with the kids.

My advice is to ride this bike for a while until you become comfortable with it. Then, when conditions permit visit some local bike ships and test ride a variety of bikes in different styles, new and used (if they have 'em). Hybrid, road, cruiser, mountain bike...etc. It should become apparent what "speaks" to you.

And like non-fixie said, it doesn't have to be expensive.

Enjoy your time with the kids and welcome to bikeforums.
