Lube Love Affairs
We all go through it, right? We get a new one and it is the best thing since sliced bread.
I tried a new one called Smoove and after a month I think this is a keeper. I was using R&R Gold. $15 buck for a big bottle. Really nice stuff. |
Do not google "lube love affairs" from a work computer.....:)
After trying a couple of the ungodly expensive "$8 for 2 oz" lubes, chain saw bar oil, home-made motor oil mix, I'm currently using plain ol' 3-in-1 from the big box store. It gets dirty quickly, but it's cheap and always there, and I rotate chains every ~500 miles, so lube doesn't get to spend a huge time on the chain anyway before it's all washed off and freshly applied. I'm planning a drivetrain overhaul in a few months - new crankset, cassette, chains - so I'm thinking of trying wax this time. |
Not another one...
Please. |
I must say that I love DrIsotope 's wax formula. I'm getting 800 to 1,000 miles from a single application. So, basically I change one chain a month. It's far and away cleaner and more effective than any of the several chain lube I've tried.

I do like Rock & Roll Gold but Smoove is way cleaner and seem to last longer. |
NFS is the best chain lube. Period. Fact. I only wave at people who use it, unless they are wearing headphones.

Lube Love AffairsI'm trying very hard to not post something that will get me banned. |
All I use now is Rock N Roll Absolute Dry, I'm even now using it on the touring bike because it holds up just as well in the rain as Rock N Roll Gold, but it keeps my driveline quieter! I have to relube my touring bike on the road anyways, so I might as well use what works the best that I found so far. I use to try one lube then try another and another, but now I'm so content I'm afraid to try something else. I only pay $10 for a bottle where I live.

I am such a scoundrel. I fall in love with a lube, but then after a while, I start to look around for something better.

Is that even a lubricant, or is just a water displacer?

I used melted wax in a crock pot for a couple of years but misplaced my crock pot and bars of Gulf wax in February when I was moving out all the furniture to replace the flooring. So I grabbed some Rock 'n' Roll Absolute Dry and liked it. Used it all up in a couple of months -- doesn't last long when used as directed and it appears to be mostly naphtha with a little PTFE powder.
Now I'm trying Rock 'n' Roll Gold, which appears to be the same thing but with a little oil. It lasts longer per application. Runs a bit dirtier but still cleans up more easily than most wet lubes. I'll probably go back to wax whenever I get around to unpacking all those cartons I threw together back in February. |

Oh, wait, Indy, are you being sarcastical? |

Didn't this star Dirk Diggler? |
I've recently started using Squirt wax Dry Lube, has been a succes so far. No dirty legs or hands when cleaning and lubrication still seems to be very good after first application
|
Today I cleaned my chain saws. The idea that chainsaw bar oil would make a good bicycle chain lube is questionable. I use nice high-grade Stihl bar oil, but this isn't exactly tidy.
I wonder if I could use paraffin on my chain saws? |
