Where did I mention that you needed carbon? Or spandex or shaved legs? Or what pedals you have?

You've got bikes that you ride because you want to, you (presumably) lube the chain and air up the tires. You make time to ride.

You literally fit my definition perfectly.

Are you offended by that?

A good question indeed, either way it's not my religion so I'll be inclined to reject all it's rules and creeds as part of my religious freedom should a police officer try to enforce them on me.

The only objective of threads like this is to divide a population into two groups, one of which the OP has judged and found wanting.

How many pages before this thread turns into a ping pong exchange of insults and then gets locked? I’m guessing 6 pages.

Using a bicycle as a conveyance does, in fact, instantly make you a cyclist.

Just as walking instantly makes you pedestrian.

Does it make you a hiker, free runner (parkourist), race walker, ministry of silly walker, or Walker Texas Ranger?

I'm sure you see the difference now.

I used to ride with a guy who consistently walked sub 6 minute miles. He eventually got to the Olympics. No idea how he did.

Runners, joggers, power walkers, and hikers are all subcategories of pedestrian. Just as racers, commuters, enthusiasts, tourists and bikepackers are all subcategories of cyclist.

You're probably right. If I call myself an enthusiast, I feel like I need to gain weight and learn about Ham radios.

And I'm not fast enough to race.

It's kind of a crisis.

Have you heard the good news about the realness of steel?

You're not one of those Carbonist heathens, are you?

You should have heard what I was calling myself a couple weeks ago when I realized that I had set myself up to ride the return 50 miles of a century in 95 degree heat and a strong headwind.

I call myself things like that almost every day, for all kinds of reasons.

Language is a dicey, fluid medium of communication. That which is inferred is not always the same as that which was implied. One person's mental image of "cyclist" is different than another's. The connotations of certain words can eventually change their definitions completely, but I don't think 'cyclist' has reached that point on a societal scale yet (outside of niche slang).

Awesome and Awful technically mean the same thing, yet one is used in a positive way and the other in a negative way.

Anything that ends with an ism is cultish and leads to fanatical set of beliefs and behaviour.

I thought that only racers deserve to be called cyclists and all other subcategories are to be referred to as a person on a bike or bike rider.
