Pros in the Big Tours like TdF, Vuelta & Giro have individual time trial days..

Do you have any individual time trials you compete in, for this to matter?

Is that a question for the OP specifically, or can anyone answer?

It matters anytime someone is concerned with performance for whatever their personal reasons.

well set up a test course and start timing your self to see what gains you can make..

Time saved over a 40km ITT. Helmet and clothing are the biggest factors not attached to the bike.

What is the baseline comparison, here?

Wind tunnel positioning.... compared to what? In the drops, on the hoods or bolt upright?

TT suit compared to..... what?

A couple notes:

– These numbers are calculated for a rider over 40kms at a time of 48minutes. Faster than most of us could go!

Here's the article. As someone else pointed out, it's fairly old and maybe the precise numbers can be argued with. https://cyclingtips.com/2010/04/bigg...ial-equipment/

Your "yeah but..." post shows you have a pathological compulsion to point out shortcomings of a bike you don't ride by pointing out something that isn't even part of the discussion. I think the pot is calling the kettle black in your case.

Depends on how the rider is dressed. They could be 100% drag, or just crossed slightly.

I'm pretty new to cycling, but I think I understand what you're saying. RuPaul = slow. Pee Wee Herman = fast. Right?

Enjoy the ride, my fellow cyclist friend. :)

More recent wind tunnel tests confirm the differences clothing can make. When Oliver Bridgewood tackled the one hour record a few months ago they demonstrated a lot of testing in the GCN videos leading up to that effort. Very relatable stuff since Ollie is a cycling enthusiast, not a pro. (Better than Ollie's previous aero demo videos with Cycling Weekly, possibly due to GCN having a bigger budget.)

While I wasn't ready for an off the rack skinsuit, let alone the custom job Ollie was fitted for, that series of videos did persuade me to get some snugger fitting sorta-aero jerseys and one of those rounded sorta-aero helmets (no fins, thanks). It helped. Cheap and easy fix.

You want aero?

Specialized built and operates its own wind tunnel. IMO, they do a great job discussing and quantifying what an aero upgrade is worth by running tests in the tunnel. They have a number videos discussing other aero effects. Search Specialized Win Tunnel on YouTube to see them all.

How fast do you ride?

15 MPH is the approximate speed at which aero drag surpasses all of the other drag factors on a bicycle combined. If you typically ride more slowly than 15 MPH, aero drag improvement isn't going to help you very much. If you ride faster than 15 MPH, the faster you go the more significant aero drag factors become.
