I find it amazing what advertising can condition people to accept

I did a 600k brevet over there out of Midland, almost all solo. Through Fort Stockton, Iraan. I think we overnighted back at Midland then day 2 did a smaller loop. Flat, desolate, dry. Just above freezing at sunrise, well over 100 by late afternoon. The sun bakes any exposed skin and the dry air sucks the water out through your pores. Listen to the lonesomeness in Marty Robbins' voice. No place for man or horse.

Scotts Bluff Nebraska is pretty cool and quite historic. It's impressive, the way it rises abruptly from the prairie. Quite a sight when you're driving west across the Great Plains.

My info is likely outdated since I rode there a lot t in high school and I'm turning 42 next week.
There was only one exit, head to the bluff just south of town. Find parking and ride. It was actually very good.
There might be a bunch of condo's there now. I haven't been there in a long time.

Everyone needs to experience an old 40 lb bike with steel rims so that they can appreciate the newer bikes.
I am still riding a 40 year old bike but I may up grade any day.

Corrected Keith Botrager quote
The people "accepting crap" today are probably pretty much the same people that were "accepting crap" before. I'm not sure that shrewd advertising mad men necessarily pulled the wool over all the discerning buyers/riders in either generation. "I want a bike that costs no more than 30x minimum hourly wage." There will always be a product for that buyer. Is it the same product today that it was in 1980? Well, in 1980 we did not have widespread installation of TIG/GTAW welding machines, so the aluminum category has indeed improved quite a bit relative to the price. "fast, light, cheap: pick any two"

Let's see:
okay, that's it. I scored a BOOMER BINGO!
where do I redeem my card?
- claiming older technology is better than anything new
- claiming "no point" to new tech, while remaining completely ignorant to how new tech was created
- completely ignorant of why there is demand for new tech
- included mandatory xenophobic rant about "Chinese" manufacturing (while typing on a device that no doubt contains components made in China)
- included mandatory derision towards "advertising"
- implies self-superiority (because surely OP hasn't been "led by the nose" by those insidious "advertisers" right?)

Also, houses aren't really built with 1.5"x 3.5" lumber anymore.

One of the best explanations ever. Pretty much sums it up, you can close the thread now. https://youtu.be/Jj0uBQ7j5c4

I'm not going to read all the posts in the thread either; but hey 10 pages! Did anybody bring up 650B wheels?

Not to weigh in too much on the silliest argument ever ("What is flat?"), but what the hell, why not.
To me, it really is how it's distributed, I don't think I'd even notice 70 feet per mile, especially if there was an equal descent. But if the 3000 feet were concentrated in a relatively small part of the route, then it would feel ljke I climbed somewhat.
My rides are always loops so the ascents and descents have to cancel each out mathematically. If it's a consistent 1-2% grade either way, that's not going to feel like significant climbing to me. I grew up in Minnesota, there were some good hills, but you had to deliberately ride to them.
