Which frameset would you like?
 

- gravel frameset with direct mount brakes for 42mm tires
- hybrid frameset with V-brakes for 2.4" tires
- road frameset with mini-V brakes for 35mm tires

A sizable minority of us prefer a short-wheelbase road frame with clearance limited to 28-mm tires, but I don't see that option.

Please post examples of choices #1 and #3 . I'm not familiar with either configuration.

Since I have enough road bikes, I'd go with a disc-equipped CF gravel frame with clearance for 45s. However, priority is low because there isn't really any good gravel riding near where I live.

What hybrid frame can accommodate that size tire? Will a V-brake cross-cable clear the top of a 2.4"?

I'm not familiar with any road frames that have V-brake bosses. Do you mean cyclocross?

I dont like any of the 3 as they all have obvious questionable design.

I would go for the gravel frameset with direct mount brakes. It'd be odd for sure though.

I guess OP isn't going to show us these unique frames. :foo: Bummer. I get the impression from this and the several other related threads that "direct mount" and "mini-V" mean something different to OP than is generally understood. I'm curious to know!

Get a custom and you can have any of these things. But rim brakes aren't that great with bigger tires.

What the heck is “direct mount” if not referring to posts brazed/welded on for canti/v brakes or u/centerpull brakes? Kinda seems like the poll is “do you want a Rivendell, a rivEndell, or a rivendEll?” I like Rivendells, and will buy one when my bank account can handle it.

I voted for direct mount because I’m pretty sure that it refers to canti/v/u/centerpull brakes and my favorite frameset was a canti-equipped tourer designed for 27” rims but *just* worked with 700c rims, and really were the best brakes I’ve ever used. I kinda wish I voted for the 35mm tires though, only because my favorite geo is on a shimmy-prone 80s Trek 770.

"Direct mount" refers to low profile caliper brakes that attach to specific frame and fork mounting points. They are primarily used on TT or Tri bikes. They've been around for just a few years and are now being replaced by discs. Though canti and V brakes are also attached on both sides they aren't referred to as "direct mount" brakes.

I want a titanium frame with clearance for wide tires (2.0 is fine), disc brakes (flat or post don't care), thru axles, 4 bottle cages bosses on the frame (at least), rack and fender mounts. For fork I am game for carbon or steel but something with rack mounts and dynamo routing like say the Rodeo Labs Spork.

Rim brakes are fine for some but for something like that I want disc brakes.

I've got a home-made #3 , but I equipped it with regular v-brakes since 35mm tires fit a little too close for my tastes with mini V-brakes.

None of the above. Rim brakes are inferior to disc brakes, even if they are made to a new standard and are harder to work on.

With that sort of choice you need a Cyclocross bike with disks and 32 mm tires.

Direct mount brakes are OK on a road bike. They don't flex as much as a center mount and they don't need as much offset in the brake pad. But he plainly is talking off-road so I would agree with you.

I'd guess no. 3 would be a cross bike and I've seen them built with mini-Vs, but being 2020 I'd want mine with discs which is why mine has discs. Do they even make direct mount brakes that can clear a gravel tire?
