Advice on a Cycle Computer Wanted

I've looked at some 'N Best Cycle Computers' web sites, but real world input is always good.

What’s your budget and how do you plan to use it? Any navigation needed. Want to save or follow tracks. Fitness stuff or not. Or may be just speed distance time and average speed.

If you have the budget, and want maps/navigation in addition to the usual speed/distance stuff, I highly recommend the Wahoo Elemnt bike computers. I switched from Garmin to Wahoo about 4 years, been great.

I use the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt but your choice should focus on what you want the computer to do. I also have a Leyzne computer as a backup; similar features at a lower price.

If you're going from not having anything to getting something, and don't want a lot of hassle or expense, go to your local bike shop and ask them to put a wired bike computer on. After you ride with that for a while, if you need or want more, come back and ask, "what's the best for this list of features?"

Cycle computers are bad, you don't want one.

Here's another way to look at it... 1. mapping: a lot, a little, none. 2. supplementary data: heart rate, cadence, power, none. 3. Web / desktop software integration: none, any will do, my personal favorite. 4. budget: under $100, under $200, over $200. Once you've bracketed these choices, it gets a lot easier.

Navigation not needed. I was thinking wireless. Mostly wanted comments on convenience, reliability, etc. I have a couple that require scrolling through all of the functions, not able to go forward and back. Had a Nashbar one that would go on and off by itself, quite annoying.

On a simple bike computer with just the basics, I like the Sigma line. Next would be CatEye. Both will do the job without having all the bells and whistles.

I’m using cheap, wired Sigmas on both of my bikes. I like the simple O-ring mounting vs having to use cable ties.

I have a Cateye Padrone. It's simple, works well, and has been reliable. I also have Ride with Gps running on my phone in my jersey pocket.

Cateye and Sigma are good. Bontrager brand are good. I had one for years that had temperature. Told me how cold I was. Now I have a Garmin 1030. Was getting shortness of breadth last April. So got a heart rate monitor. New toy helps me recover.

Most of the manufacturers websites have screen shots so you can see what information is standard.

My Sigma wireless gives me some nice extras at an affordable price: % grade, air temp, section time, current altitude, altitude climbed along with cumulative totals. For maps I pull out my iPhone and run Sigma for additional data, but some pricey computers do it all.
