I've had this thing in a tool drawer for years, maybe decades, and could never figure out what it was for.
It's a common brand of kitchen ware. I could never bring myself to get rid of it as I figured I might modify it into something useful.
At some point earlier this year, I realized that it is a paint can opener, & it works quite well for that.

I still wouldn't know why the tool has that sticking out ridge on it. I doubt it would be to stiffen it for the prying action like for can lid lifting that you guess it is used for.

I have a hunch, it could be used for when you put food into jars for preserving, or something like that. I'd ask your (or somebody else's) grandma about it. And as said, it is a common kitchen brand handle type, it looks like a common old style knife handle, telling me it is something to do with kitchen in bygone era.
I keep all kinds of 'weirdly shaped tools' for those times when you do something and are casting about for some gizmo that would do this or that... nevermind what its original use was.

It doesn't seem to be a paint can opener, that working tip is rounded too far back for that, also seems a bit too thick. I once bought paint from English (UK) paint company Farrow & Ball and when they ship paint cans to North America, they secure the lids with special clips that help to prevent accidental can opening in transport. This tool might be used to press lock those spring clips on the cans. However those clips can be applied with just a finger press as in the pic bellow.

Good thinkin'!
On further searching, it may be the broken handle of a strainer.

Does work well for paint cans, 'tho- I'll use it for that.

I believe you got it.
This raised ridge is actually what was left after somebody cut off the strainer ring, perhaps because it had a hole in the mesh or whatever and he figured the handle is still good. I save things like that too. Just the other day, we were throwing out still newish but broken iron that I failed to fix and I saved its nice 12' electrical cord. And today a friend of mine brought to me his iron to fix the cord on it (it had wires burned inside the insulation just behind the wall plug in end). I opened the back plate of the iron and replaced the whole cord for him. And since it is time for Christmas decorations, I glued on several angel wings, two part epoxy glue works magic.

LOL re-reading that over, it does read like that
but it was just a sample of handy jobs I was asked to do in these pre holiday times. It included a sheep's fallen off leg and some solder on a little lantern hanging above Jesus's cradle in the stable...
