The Huffy Wheel, invoking the power of Santa
In 1968 word got around to me that Western Auto had gotten two new cool bikes. WA had always been the go to place for parts and junky accessories in my neighborhood except for Schwinn tires. I saw the bikes at a WA store while we were on vacation so we went down to have a look.
There it was parked in front of the store. I ran up to it and hollered “neat!” It was beautiful in its blue color with the steering wheel on it. I had to have it. The trouble was I already had a 6 month old purple Schwinn Deluxe Stingray with SA tripper shift and white sparkle saddle. I thought my ride was so old and stodgy up against the Huffy Wheel.
Like Ralphie in the Christmas Story movie I had to strategize on how to get my own Huffy Wheel. Mom gave me a resounding no. I was mad as we walked away. I said, I’m going to tell Santa Claus to bring it to me! After all I’d told the Santa Clone at Sanger-Harris that I wanted the Stingray. Surely he’d come through again. Nope! The next bike three years later was a Varsity.
