I suggest you study the official website carefully. Once you leave Deadwood, Lead is the only real town before Hill City. There is Rochford, but I’m not certain there is lodging there. Maybe things have changed, but it’s very rural. Between Rochford and Hill City there are no services. South of Hill City there in only Pringle. Again, not sure there is lodging there, and the one restaurant in town was closed on Sundays when I was there. There was a laundry in Edgemont and a motel or two. One nice thing is that the shelters with water had plenty of it in the cisterns and shade.
It isn’t a trail with closely spaced towns with services. There are relatively long stretches where you can’t even get off the trail.

1) Yes. Although we aren't using them - there are shuttles...
2) Check out bikemickelson.com -- there are, in fact, several places for lodging along the way... mostly at the 40, 60, 80, and one at the end... I can't tell you if they're luxury or not. LOL. But if it's a bed, I'm good. LOL.
For route planning, etc. that's the best site I've found.

Edgemont had a good number of rabbits hopping around on the main drag. Very cute.

Some photos in case you are interested. There are a good number of cattle gates along segments. Also pictured is one of the shelters/water stops.
