Unused rivets
What is the purpose of a set of strategically placed unused rivets in a C Ring? It's something that I see often, but haven't thought much of it until now.

Those are shift pins. You should be looking at them from the other side of the ring. They help the chain move up from the small ring to the big ring. Notice how they are basically in 2 sets, one on each half of the ring.

Those pins are to help lift the chain from the small ring to the larger ring. They’re part of what makes indexed front shifting work
( Also from the smallest ring to the middle on a triple).

Was looking around google & here, but it just didn't net the information. The ramps being there is what drove the question, & I thought "nah this cant be a government system" . So I thought it was for another reason that was unknown.
Same crank has a "pin" on the big ring that is aimed towards the backside of the arm, but does not touch the arm. Sheldon doesnt seem to have anything on that item. It's not shown in the above picture, but is in this picture.

You'd think that something similar would have been added to prevent the chain to drop on the frame. Have not benefited from that pin from all my miles of riding. Have had a few chains get tossed over catching the pedal/shoe.
