What would you buy with 2500?

Hi all, was posted in intro section and suggested to post here..

I like road and mountain equally, and my favorite bikes so far in life were a late 80s Marinoni with shimano 600, and a fisher Joshua with XT. I'm an ex racer in both road and mtb, and want quality but doesn't have to be the very best...

Current bikes are Apollo Gran tour road frame with pre SIS shimano 600 and a Kona shred hard tail with deore. Both get ridden multiple times per week aggressively. most winter is spent on the indoor trainer.

My wife gave me a budget of 2500. I can push her to 3k. Do I upgrade my road bike or mountain. Road tech is so far ahead where my Apollo is as its pre SIS shimano 600... The true vintage stuff and its beautiful. Mountain tech too is quite a bit ahead, but the 8 speed rear has never failed me. . I'd love full suspension with a rear lockout. The positioning In modern road bikes looks great compared to vintage stuff, especially hand position...

If you had 2500 to spend, what would you buy? New? Used?I'm leaning to road. But I could also see scouring for a more vintage Marinoni for the memories it would bring. But. A quick XC bike would be damned sweet too.

Argh.

I have more opportunity to ride roads here; 'Singletrack' is something that requires a drive and more planning than "get up, suit up, pump up, ride". For $2,500 locally I can get an 8 speed Dura Ace equipped titanium road frame that's 20-30 years old, and still nicer than anything new at that price (but only barely).

I'd try to weigh price with my "utility". If I'm 70% road and commuting and only 30% mountain, I'd buy a nicer road bike. I don't have suggestions for ya since my newest bike was about 10 years old when I bought it 🙃

Upgrade your road bike to new groupset/drivetrain and buy a Mt bike.

Retro roadies- old frames with STI's or Ergos
