Cranky Crank

A buddy of mine has a Diamondback MTB, circa 2012, and the crank squeaks on the down stroke of his right foot.

What should I start looking at first to remedy this?

Thanks in advance.

Should be posted in 'bicycle mechanics' for obvious reasons, not GD. That said...

Yup. In the crank arm category, if the drive side isnít a single piece, noise may come from the joint by which the arm is attached to the spider. That typically isnít fixable.

And if all that fails, donít forget to check and see if you have greased the seat post in the frame.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction... Can you recommend a good all-purpose grease?

Pretty much any grease...poly, white lithium, nothing expensive is needed for putting pieces together. Save the good stuff for bearings.
