Are You Obsessed with Cycling?

Since this is a cycling forum, the obvious answer might be, “Well duh”

But I am talking about thinking about your next ride, or trainer session, almost every day. Do you arrange your schedule, appointments, events so you can ride?

add 1 and 4 together to get a better picture of the fanatics.

only when I'm thinking about bicycle stuff. Otherwise, I'm planning my next ride.

No... Not obsessed, but as I get older there are fewer things that I am capable of doing.

RATS: No longer caving, hiking, running, hunting, jumping, climbing, and just barely fishing, and riding my bicycle... Its just pitiful...

Oh... I can still push the cart when we go for groceries...

I'm personally more interested in the gear/engineering/biomechanics of cycling than actually riding. I'm totally obsessed but you wouldn't know it looking at my strava

Planning my day around my priorities hardly qualifies as obsessive.

I've always been involved in one sport or another over the last 50 years since I was old enough to play football. So it's more like I am obsessed with physical activities. Just so happens that cycling is the main sport for now. I do think about cycling everyday one way or another. Equipment, repairs, accessories, rides, but it is not always possible to get in a ride as planned seeing I care for my legally blind mother. My plans can be ruined an hour before a planned ride. So I ride when I can and ruined plans may cause my planning to be carried over from one day to the next. Same ride, same plan, to be continued. Sometimes ruined ride plans turn into cycling equipment hunting so no biggie!

I don't think being committed to cycling and "having a life" are mutually exclusive. There are plenty of hours in a day; I just try to spend a few of them on my bike.

While out riding today, I came up with this poll. That should tell you something. In my 30s I was totally into cycling. Belonged to a club, most of my friends were cyclists and attended parties and weddings of my pals. This continued to mid-40s with group rides every weekend, attending every local cycling event, and collecting stacks of numbers from fun rides of centuries and doubles. Even got into all day endurance rides with major climbing until a sudden life change and all of it stopped.

Got into sports cars, restoration, drives and clubs with the same fervor of cycling. Did that for 20 years. Even though I was getting ok at single track mtn biking, I was putting on weight and never felt fit, like the old days.

Then COVID hit and I had to look at activities I could do by myself outdoors while not passing heavy breathing hikers on narrow trails, which were all overrun. So I bought a Bianchi and hit the streets. The old spark was rekindled and with Strava, instead of my old cycling mates, I compete against myself as well as against segment winners. It keeps me motivated and pushing myself to achieve. So now I am in again with both feet and planning my rides, rest days, days to push distance and days to go for PRs. Have actually met some great people while out riding and they are on Strava too, so we stay in touch.

So I plead guilty to being obsessed... again. But this time, instead of eating cheeseburgers with my car buddies, I am getting my cardio into shape and looking forward to the days I can actually crush some climbs.

One month after surgery from shattering bones in one arm due to accident, I was out riding again while actually enduring pain from the injured arm and sprained joints in other parts of the body. Really hurts when I hit some bumps in the road or climbing steep hills. I healed fairly quickly since then. Although I don't ride everyday and my bike only costs $250 (It survived the accident without any damage, save for a few scratches, despite the fact, I didn't bail out. the irony)

I do have a bit of an obsession with biking and bikes. I love riding, I really like looking at bike stuff, sometimes I really like working on them. I love when a project is finished and it comes out as I had envisioned. Again, I love riding bikes!

AAA person here. Anything, Anytime, Anywhere. I'll try it at least once. As I get older, some activities are fading away and endurance sports are being focused upon.

Obsessed is the wrong word. The OP should have had a better choice of words.

Almost everyone on this forum cycles, and almost nobody is obsessed.

The thing that keeps me from saying that cycling is an obsession, is that something else is an obsession: Playing music.

Oddly enough my friends who don't ride think I'm obsessed because of behaviors such as owning N+1 bikes, and riding in all weather.

I've figured out over the last year that cycling is no longer optional for me. If I have more than two days without cycling, the black dog descends on me. Nothing else is as effective and reliable. I am a different person when I cycle almost every day.
