Before I started exercising, I didn't have to jog 5 miles to get a runner's high. All I had to do was climb a flight of stairs...

20 years ago I could run 12 miles. Just get in my head get my own pace and keep going. Dropping a deuce afterwards and having rubber legs getting back up.

Now far cry from then. Got to get in shape again.

Before I started cycling, asking me to run was likely to get you laughed at. I could run on a treadmill for maybe 15-20 seconds, but then I'd have to stop or slow down to walking. I just had zero stamina. But after losing weight and cycling all the time, I realized I was getting myself into shape when I was pitching balls to my son and was able to run after them when he hit them. It was a great feeling.

Google "snot rocket" and make sure you're at the very back of the pack before you blow one.

Not sure where this quote comes from, but "It sure beats a drug addiction"

Cycling is addicting. If you ride regularly, and put effort into it, your body produces endorphins to manage the physical stress. Endorphins are addictive, and when they get you hooked on a physical activity, rather than dreading a long ride or workout, you look forward to it. Most new riders don’t keep on the bike long enough, or ride hard enough to get hooked. Unlike other drugs, the addiction to physical activity is good for you.

There have been so many times that after a 100km ride, the only thing I enjoy thinking about is my next ride. After race days I was often too sore to get out of bed quickly, or to even walk normally. It was a painful to lift my leg to get on my bike. But after 50km or so, the stiffness and pain was gone, and I was happily chasing the wind.

Then the 500ft, to 1000ft, to 2000ft elevation gains. And my breathing now feels so clear and open. I started with a Montgomery Wards 18 speed comfort bike. I started riding it, because I needed to lose 50lbs to make the cut for Navy boot camp. Riding it, along with two gym classes, and a crash diet helped me shed the pounds in 6 months. I got a few more bikes, while in the Navy. Riding the strand, through Imperial beach, Chula Vista, National city, and into downtown San Diego was tough for me but I did it, and it felt good. I didn't ride much after I got out, because I got a car, that along with work and school ate away at my time. Flash forward to 2012. I was continuing my 50 year quest to get my AA degree. I was on the balls of my rear end financially and I didn't have a car. I got a used department store mtb off of CL, and that was a dog. I sold it, and got the GMC Denali road bike...it was less crappier than the mtb I had. It suited my needs, allowed me to commute from the light rail in LA, and ride the rest of the way to the school. I also used it to haul groceries and it suited my purposes. I had some money saved up, and my sister hooked me up with an Amazon gift card and I was able to upgrade to a Diamondback insight II. I still have that bike and for me it's a great bike.

Nothing sexy about this bike but it got the job done for me.

Great bike!
Last year I caught the wrenching bug, and I have several projects I want to do. I know these are junky bikes to some people, but to me they are gold. Ride on and have fun!

I am still looking for a response to the phlegm question. I get that too. Usually during climbing.

I'm confused. Is there a typo in there?

If you bike enough, here's what might happen:
It's Sunday. You had a great 62 mile ride on Saturday and your legs feel it a little. Grass is mowed. Tasks around the house are done, You've ate a early dinner. You deserve a nice evening relaxing on the couch. But your conscience starts in on you:
"You lazy, bro? Letting those dinner calories go to your fat belly? It's nice outside and you're just gonna sit here like a little princess?...."
Darnit! I'm riding!
Happens to me almost every Sunday.

Seems that my weeks have a few extra sundays, & my evenings are inverted. Can't seem to make it to most mondays.

For many of us, riding a bike isn't the only thing we do.

For example, I also enjoy fixing bikes, reading about bikes, talking about bikes and looking at bikes. And drinking beer.

Interesting. I find that when I reach a certain level of fitness, my body tends to crave daily exercise which raises my heart rate more than my daily 3 mile dog walks. If I don’t get that exercise, I tend to get antsy. Probably just me.
