Mtn biker mauled by bear
Check out this article about a mtn biker who was racing round a bend in Glacier National park and ran into a bear. There is a photograph of the collision site on the trail from the official investigation. It shows a person barely visible who is 37 feet away from the photographer. Traveling at a speed of 20-25 mph the biker would have reached the hiker in about one second.
From invisible to in-your-face in one second. This close encounter proved fatal.

I remember when this happened (kind of local to me)....it was 5 years ago.
A few years after this we had a mountain biker get killed by a Cougar on the west side of Washington State.

Every time I have ever hiked in bear country (black bear no less) I have carried a magnum caliber pistol. If I was out west in Grizzly/Wolf/Cougar country I would always be packing when out in their territory. Black bears are tame by comparison. Maybe I'm a Nancy but seems like people are on the menu in that area.

of course you'll know more about road issues first & more frequently before knowing what happens out in the tree infested woods. Less likely to encounter a bear on the city road too.
