A guy comes into the shop, "I NEED A SEAT POLE!"
A what?
"SEAT POLE!"
A what pole?
"Seat pole, holds the seat to the bike!"
Oh, you mean a 'seat post'!
"YEAH, SEAT POLE"
Seat post!
"SEAT POLE!"
OK, what ever, what size?
"This size!" (picks one out of the parts box)
Are you sure?
"yeah, yeah, this size"
OK, if it doesn't fit bring in the bike, or the old SEAT POST and we can measure and get the right size.
"yeah yeah yeah"
Pay up front. Seat post.

A few week later...a guy walks into the shop;
"I NEED A SEAT POLE....."

The above is a true story.

Same here.

And yet, they're seemingly close:
> It is supposable that ... (as in, it is conceivable)
> It can be supposed that ... (as in, it can be imagined or believed)

So it's not a stretch for a person to imagine one or the other could technically work.

Got to love language. So many exceptions to the rules. And given we're in the age of Spell Check and Non-Editing, who knows where it'll all end up. It is supposable that, can be supposed that, it'll end up nowhere good.

Up to now, I have never seen the word "supposable" used in any context. I can see why, "conceivable" is a whole lot easier to say.

You haven't seen "supposable" because you're not opposed to.

I thought supposable had to be a neologism, but the dictionary site says it was first used in 1627

And about "neologism" - Richard Nolle invented the neologism for an article published in Dell Horoscope magazine in 1979.

Although, there is this: The term neologism is first attested in English in 1772, borrowed from French néologisme (1734).

Yeah, neologism is one of the best examples of a neologism that came into common usage. Funny that the French had a word for it and English speakers were ignoring the phenomenon. I suppose they just said, "you made up that word"

Neologisms are one of the early signs of dementia

Honestly, I don't think any lawyers use books anymore.

I thought I was being so neological with "factish", then I googled it and found some postmodernist who combined the word "fact" with "fetish."

Don't forget to use your breaks to stop.

If you're peddling down the rode, and see a coffee shop, do you apply your breaks to take a brake?

It’s rough when the grammar police get upset but those are the breaks.
