It wasn’t crashed. That frame damage was the result of clipless pedals and the overwhelming stopping force of disc brakes. In this case, it’s proper to call them disc breaks. You’re slipping, BF. This place used to be better.

Fortunately the bike is aluminum and not CF. If it were the latter, it might have exploded and not merely cracked.

I can't participate in your poll. There is no choice for how ridiculous it is to have to ask others for their opinon. <grin>

If you think it's stolen, then report it to the police at the sellers indicated location. And also report it to eBay.

You don't need to go by what essentially will be mob opinion that many times has cost innocent people their lives or means of living.

My apologies, I'll get off my soap box now.

Looks to me like a situation where a bike lock was stronger than a frame... correct me if I'm wrong or let me know how it should be reported.
The second picture appears to show that the frame is not completely separated at the downtube.

To me it has been crashed. The tube has not been cut, you can even see a dent along the crack and it is not a cut but a break. Besides, why would anyone cut the bike and not the lock?

There probably was a dent in the downtube from the bike falling over on to something. Aluminum does not like to be dented, and if the dent is strong enough, it can crack and tear. So this all lines up with what the seller is saying.

But I think he is leaving out that the bike was probably crashed pretty hard straight on. That crash is what ultimately caused the downtube to tear like it did and to bend the top tube like it did. Carbon forks are amazingly strong, but I'll bet that one would fail an ultrasound inspection, and I'd bet the front wheel is far from true.
Crashed, broke the frame in that fashion, but the original rim and fork remained in good enough shape retain.

The damage to the frame looks like crash damage.

Basically getting a 105 gruppo for $750. Not worth it. That is a lower end Trek bike. The AL series are fairly cheap. And fragile. TREK makes that bike very light, and it shows it in crashes.

Regarding potential stolen bikes for sale

If the victim of a stolen bike has not reported via a post on Bike Index, in my opinion they don't care about it's recovery. It's fairly easy to post on the site, and one would think that if
they cared much at all, they'd go through the research on how to report a stolen bike and would find this site. That's my reasoning. I have personally helped return three bikes to their owners via Bike Index.

Who steals a bike, damages the frame to this level, then sells the whole bike when the only identifying part is the frame?

Just sell the stolen components.

And the downtube clearly isn't fully separated.

Just curious, what are you seeing that could possibly lead to that conclusion? Andre the Giant stealing bikes by bending the frame tube until it breaks?

LOL ah-effin-men!!! Some are goddamn overzealous about reporting on things based solely on conjectures. What a great way to drain police resources while they play Sherlock Holmes!

current running poll shows 10 people voted damange, 3 voted theft
damn the 3 who voted theft are the types that go on "neighborhood" forum and make posts like "Suspicious kids around swimming pool", "coyotes loose", "loud noise last night", etc

Nobody around here worries about coyotes when there are lions roaming around the neighborhood.

While I didnít vote, I think it could be damage from theft, and Iím hardly one of the people you describe. No coyotes or pools in my neighborhood, and hearing gunfire in the big city doesnít phase me. Hell. Iím not even on a neighborhood forum, and I love to hear coyotes while out on tour.

Thanks for playing. We have some nice parting gifts waiting back stage for you.

From time to time people would come in trying to sell him bikes. There was often tell tale frame damage caused by a Kryptonite being pried off, likely with a metal object. He would never buy such frames. I can see some idiot trying to pry a lock off a carbon frame and breaking it.

Damaged, OK. Bent to the point of breaking, I don't think so. (Carbon, a different story obviously)
