That's right, but trolls have to pick up on something. That's how it works on forums. Fortunately I don't really care and it keeps the thread up top.

Crazy isn't it? At 53 years of age I don't need some internet dorks trying to explain the meaning of a common phrase and when I can and cannot use it. But they are welcome to knock themselves pointlessly out.

Okay I'm really bored so looked up the definition of "money no object"

Collins Dictionary: "If you say that money is no object, you are emphasizing that you are willing or able to spend as much money as necessary"

Necessary being the key word in my case.

Yes, apparently someone has to spell out to people why this is a figure of speech. "No object" is an absolute, meaning that there's no limit on what the person is willing to spend. A synonym for "no limits" is infinite. No one is willing or able to spend infinite money on anything, so it's always hyperbole.

That's not my weird definition of "no object" , it's very clearly what the words "no object" literally mean. A figure of speech is never meant to be taken literally.

And because words mean things (at least in the work I do that funds my extravagant bike hobby), I took you to mean that cost was not primary factor, if even a factor at all, in how you would make your choice. But, I was intrigued with the whole "piling money to the sky" or somesuch a few hundred posts back.

To me, the greatest comedy here is a bunch of people who don't know what "figure of speech" means telling someone else how to write.

How about "pulling out all the stops" ? Also, pretty much a synonym, yet they aren't actually talking about pipe organs.

BTW, his usage is completely consistent with the dictionary usage, it's simply an implied condition --if there's a difference that he'll be able to appreciate, then money is no object. He knows it's more expensive, he's asking if people have actually noticed an appreciable difference in quality. Why this obvious point seems to be going over your collective heads is beyond me. It's a perfectly reasonable way to put the question.

The nonexistent kettle obviously cannot "meet" the imaginary pot .... must be a "figure of speech"---which of course is not actually a "figure."

I'm really struggling to see any point in going for a top tier groupset i.e. DuraAce/Red Etap/Super Record. They just don't seem to offer any advantage remotely in proportion to their extra cost over second or even third tier groups.
Other than vanity and a few pointless gram savings, is there any point?

Does that help to make it easier to understand? I could even just delete the whole first line for the really sensitive types around here.

I understood you. My only point in reply to you was that my understanding wasn't very far off from yours...it was clear to me that you had a set of criteria to use in your evaluation, and you were not using cost as a limiting factor.

If these other dudes are getting their bib straps all knotted up over pedantic (and potentially non-standard) evaluation of a phrase, they need to go ride a bike or something.

Without pedantry, threads would only go on for a page or so - questions answered, advice dispensed, information shared. Done.

Where's the fun in THAT?
