I find the idea that there are "sides" on this issue hilarious.
I don't want a triple, I feel bad that people who do largely can't find them. I'm also annoyed that I find it very hard to find new bikes with a big enough chain ring for me. I don't feel the need to turn that into some sort of argument about the inherent inferiority of the compact for anyone else but me.

You're begging the question. How do YOU know people aren't changing because they like the new setup better?
You're telling a bunch of people who prefer 1x that they're wrong, who are you to make such a judgment?
YOU make no sense at all.

This sort of question/statement always garners the most "interest". Two things: there are many "crossover gear ratios" in a three X whatever (although that's what I've been using happily for many years) so you're not getting all the ratios you think you are, and my wife just went from 3X9 to 1X12 and loves it.

My wife absolutely loved the change from 3x9 to 2x11, and was even happier when she got electronic shifting. Fashion doesn't exist in her world of bikes (except for clothing, of course). She's never read a bike publication or looked at an online bike forum, so I'm not sure how Big Bike is getting the messages to her.

Most of this boils down to where you ride and how strong you are.
For those who are riding on the flats, there is no need for an inner chainring. Can ride all day without it.
Where I live nothing is flat. I’m not in the mountains, but when I roll down my driveway I can’t go anywhere without having some amount of climbing. When I was younger my low gear was 42-28. When I was older, it went to 38-32. At 65 I went to a triple with a 30-32. 6 months ago I’m running 30-36, which I rarely use, but it’s there when I have to.
I was never that strong a rider, and obviously much less now. But I know my current ability has nothing to do with the future of cycling. I’ll leave that to younger generations. I never want to become one of “those” old guys.
