Sure. And every once in a while, I'll stop, lean over, squeeze the tire and be surprised that it's NOT flat.

lol. happened yesterday to me toward the end of my 50 mi ride. I think it was because my legs were tired after a 200mi week. Time to recover I guess. I actually stopped to check the tires and the brake pads haha.

Funny question because I get the flat/low pressure feeling once every few weeks. Glad to hear I’m not the only one this happens too. It often isn’t just the fatigue but it’s that my rear wheel feels kind of squiggly as if tire pressure is half what it should be. I just keep grinding away and usually I forget about it.

I have got off the bike and spun the rear wheel to make sure it wasn’t rubbing on the frame or brake.

You’re experiencing introinversiodirectional complex. Bicycle tires, it appears, thought to be otherwise inanimate objects, have a sensory aptitude and can sense when they’re going the wrong direction. When they sense this, wanting to go in the right direction, they can present a slight amount of resistance which can make the operator feel as if the tires are under-inflated. If you go to the other side of the road, or mount the tires backwards, the introinversiondirectional complex can be overcome.

Have gotten into a ride a short ways and the legs start saying we are done. I tell them to shut up and 5-10 minutes later everything is fine. Not sure if that is what you meant.

I'm not sure which I dread most -- feeling the tire(s) and finding it's not flat, or feeling the tire and finding it is going flat. Or done gone flat.

Having been an in-line skate competitor in a previous life (i.e. Rollerblades) I found out pretty quickly why we feel a tire is low. I'm pretty sure it's the texture of the pavement that does that.
On skates, some pavement just glides and others, that are just as smooth just don't run fast. For instance, it was my experience that smooth pea-gravel sized asphalt even though it was rougher was usually pretty darn fast. Fine-textured asphalt although smooth, it felt like the skate wheels dug into the surface and was slower. Maybe less surface contact translates into more speed?
I think to some degree that applies to bikes also. However, now that I run a lower pressure on my road tires (Challenge Strada Bianca's) I don't notice it much any more.

I do, not infrequently, get a feeling while riding that a tire(s), normally the rear tire, is flat. But that is due to a feeling of squishyness, not slowness (well, I'm always slow, so...). Often it seems to be due to a change in the road surface, but sometimes I can discern no reason for the feeling. After checking (visually) a few times, normally the feeling goes away. Paranoia, maybe?

So what's with chip seal that makes you feel like you have a flat? Is it adding resistance to your rolling tire? Does it compress when your tire rolls on it? Are we actually slowing down?
Who here has a scientific answer for this phenomenon? I'm sure we all have a theory? What's yours?

Not a scientist nor do I pretend to be but the answer seem rather simple - at least to me! The more friction of the surface, the greater the rolling resistance. Not to mention it is just sucks to ride on it. Of course if you get to ice, then the theory doesn’t hold.
