How long before refueling

Hey guys. How long do you go before feeling like you need to refuel? My rides are normally 20-40 miles, and I never refuel, but last week I got weirdly tired around mile 45. I had drank a 750 ml bottle of vodka the night before, so I blamed it on that, but I wonder if I "bonked" and rode far enough that I should have eaten something.

I generally do no eat solid foods on my rides as I have had issue with my stomach, so I will put electrolytes and a fuel powder like Hammer's Perpetuem in my bottles for anything where I am going to be out for more than 2 hours. On long rides over 3 or 4 hours, I will take some homemade bars that I can have been able to keep down that does not cause me any distress, along with the powders in my bottles. Anything under 30 is generally just water, but if it is really hot and humid, I will still have some electrolytes in the water. Being in the Southeast, electrolytes are really important

It actually sounds like you were dehydrated. I would just add a bottle of vodka to your bottle cages the next time you ride 45mi without food after having downed a fifth of vodka.
It'll help you stay hydrated and ensure you keep making those great life choices you are known for.

I wasn't dehydrated, stopped to refill my water, and vodka in the bottle cages is already something I do but thanks for the tip

Some of the best advice anybody ever gave me: "Drink before you get thirsty. Eat before you get hungry."

Is this a joke or are you literally trying to kill yourself?

You should’ve had some caviar, too.

Anything under about 30miles I take only water. If it’s really hot maybe add an electrolyte to one of the bottles.

Also, Dry January may be for you.

Hard and hilly 45 miler might have had someone carrying extra baggage to have bonked.

If I am fit, I never consider eating on rides less than 4 hours but if fat and unfit like now, 2-3 hours at a decent pace is where my gas tank will be empty.

The vodka bottle might break in the cages. Time for some Yetis!

Keep this up and you'll have to buy a separate bike for your liver.

None of the stuff you talk about on bf is going to be much use if you don't deal with that. I know from experience that you probably already know that. I just hope you don't have to have something really bad happen before you act on that. If you really are riding around drinking vodka on the bike, it's more a matter of when than if for the something bad to come. Your body was telling you that you can't keep this up.

Please don't do those group rides drunk. You really could kill someone.

When i stay fasted the entire day, i don't need to refuel, energy stays available for the whole day, it feels magical. I have a nice meal when i'm back home. The only trouble is the next day, all energy stores are depleted, so i do it only when i don't ride the next day. If i do ride the next day, i start fasted and start refuelling after an hour or so, but it the depends on headwind strength, which varies usually around 15 to 30km/h. My daily commutes are 90km.

i never do group rides under the influence, I'm acutely aware of everyone's safety. The water bottle is mainly so I can sneak it into my sober living place (everyone there is relapsing except for like 1 or 2 dudes lol)

also I broke my neck bodysurfing 4 months ago that was rough almost died.

So you are deliberately bringing alcohol into a space with those who are trying to recover and failing? Having known many alcoholics in my life some of whom actually got better and one of whom has been sober for 15+ years now, this just sickens me. However you have an illness as well, you need to seek recovery if you cannot live in a sober space without bringing alcohol into it. I don't go for religious stuff personally and my friend who is 15+ years sober doesn't really either (though they dabble in Buddhism) but these folks might be able to help you: https://www.aa.org/find-aa or if not them: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline or if not them this has a lot of links and helpful information: https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/publicatio...d-getting-help
