obviously if you are the SoCal type who goes out riding in gangs, but only when it gets to be 63 degrees or warmer then you are not going to comprehend this thread.
for those 67 year olds who have been out alone on a night ride, 25 miles from nowhere at 11 PM in the rain at 34 degrees, then you will understand completely.

I've seen crazier and if this is his solution to not being good at or wanting to mess with flats then good on him. He really does need two wheels tho. This only solves half the potential problem

Koyote it is so much fun to do those crazy rides you won't believe it. And you get this macho feeling if you make it home.
We even have a waterproof sound system cranking out the jams, and a Big Blue scuba diving light good to 300 feet for extra dependability. And yes, i hear a lot of coyotes out on these rides, because when it gets cold, they start to hunt, and when they kill a chicken, they start howling to celebrate.

Yeah so the reason for team cars and NRS (neutral race service) is because those folks are racing professionally, they need new wheels or a new bike quickly because they cannot take the time to fix a flat no matter how little time it may take for a professional mechanic to do it. Anyone not racing does not need to carry wheels just a pump and some tubes and maybe a small multi tool or carry CO2 as well and make it faster.
Carrying an entire wheel set that is fully set up (with cassettes or freewheels and tires and tubes and maybe rotors) for my bike just to go out on a ride is silly, if my wheels are not durable enough to handle a ride I would build wheels that are and if I get a flat I know how to fix it on the road and if I didn't I would literally practice at home which will help immensely.

took the spare on a 55 mile ride, a bit sluggish up the grades but nothing compared to the 40 lbs of Nutri=Nuggets i slogged home from "Winco-Your Supermarket Low Price Leader" the other day.
no wind resistance as it sits behind the rider,
plenty o piece of mind.
remember, this is for brutal conditions , night-freeze-rain-alone. miles out.
normal rides= no wheel.
i can change a flat in the cold rain, i just don't want to.
using a Schwalbe Marathon. if that tire proves to be as advertised then i might ditch the wheel forever.
heck i own a Vitus plus Carbone, full SSC, if that ain't a weight weeny bike...
so if i did not think i needed another wheel, believe you me...

Why are you riding in freezing rain? That just seems sadistic, silly and dangerous. There are times not to ride and if your ride requires taking a full wheelset (which would have to include a spare cassette or freewheel) probably not a ride I would want to be on unless I was a professional pro tour cyclist which nobody here is..
If you are really worried about flats, I would look into getting some really puncture resistant tires and looking at the Tannus Armor inserts and make sure your tires are properly inflated before riding. But again I probably just wouldn't be riding in the freezing rain at least not intentionally.
Would love to see the Vitus, it would be a good post for the Classic and Vintage section. Not modern weight weenie-ism but a cool vintage bike.
