Riding home at night on quiet streets after a couple of beers is an underrated pleasure of bicycling.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum.
When I ride it is about:
exercise and spinning+breathing
the smells of being outdoors,
the sounds of tires on pavement/gravel,
the awareness of my surroundings,
maybe the companionship of another rider,
or the feeling of freedom by myself.

not a great cyclist, but even a worse pub hopper.

A college roommate practiced drinking and riding on a nightly basis. He figured it was better and safer than drinking and driving. One night after getting snockered at the Irish pub he rode home as usual, however he passed out on the bike going downhill at about 35mph and ran into the back of a parked car. Somehow he dragged himself home arriving at the door around 1am. His face was fairly well beat up, but nothing broken.
Yes, he never drank and rode again after that. Come to think of it he stopped going out to get drunk and did it at the apartment every night. Yes, he was an alcoholic, but has been sober for over 30 years now. Odd thing is I don't drink alcohol, never did thanks to plenty of examples of the dangers of the stuff while in the Navy.

Does a drunk bike driving ticket carry the same penalties as a DUI while driving a car? Curious, since most if not all states consider bikes to be vehicles and subject to practically all the same laws.

That was a long time ago, things have changed, still wish I had that 73 cool lemon Schwinn Sports Tourer I rode back then though. Rode that bike 5 days a week to my summer job, working 2nd shift on a brake press at a local factory, then to the local watering hole, then back home at 2am bar time, Got pulled over by the police at least 7 times that summer, various infractions, never a ticket.

Funny how some assume that drinking necessarily means bleary-eyed drunkenness. Guess I should be glad the topic isn't weed!

I only buy local.
Minimize my footprint = global ethics.
@Rolla - the weed is local, too. And 100% legal.

I have finished several localish bike tours at my local watering hole, including my two-week tour back in September. Outdoor seating, so I just lean the bike against the wall. Not a far ride home when I am done.
