I’m still wondering as to the “why” of the situation? I’ll venture one possibility :foo:. The owner needed a new chain. Since it’s a single speed configuration, they’ll need one of the same length. The chain has a “quick link”, so the chain was reasonably easy to remove. The bike is secured (kind of) in a rack near a LBS. They will have the LBS ensure the new chain is the same length as the old one and buy a new “quick link”. Return to the bike rack (hoping the bike was still there), install the new chain and ride off. Case solved :thumb:. |

We had a Huffy stolen from the bike co-op, when a carbon frame was left hanging. Some people laughed at the stupidity, but they misunderstood. Someone stole a ride. |

after my 2nd 4 runner was stolen I took similar measures. the 1st one that was stolen, was new. the insurance money helped me buy a used one. it was older & a little rough but it was mime & I wanted to keep it. never got the 1st one back. but after I got the 2nd one back:
- remove ignition fuse under dash - remove ignition coil wire from under the hood - steering wheel lock sure someone could have towed it, but no one was jumping in & driving it away |
I did an overnight tour this past weekend. Had to stop half way for some last minute grocery items. Left the bike outside the store, which is located in a very busy shopping center. Later, I stopped and aet lunch by a creek. My back was turned the entire time. Camped that night at a very busy state park. Left the bike leaning against my picnic table and all my gear outside the tent. The next morning I took a snack break by the same creek on my way home. Back again turned. Later made a stop at a busy c-store across the road from the aforementioned busy shopping center. Left the bike outside while I did so. Then I stopped by my local club's spring picnic in the city. Leaned my bike against a wall (like dozens of other people did) and forgot about it. Last stop was my local bar. Again, I leaned the bike against a wall. I was mostly outside, but I did go inside twice to order pints.
Never locked the bike once, yet it (and my gear) did not get stolen. |
when I was a kid, I left my bike outside the aquarium shop, as I always did when running in for fish food. on one occasion, it was stolen. at 10-12? yrs old, it was my only independent transportation. shame on the the thief, but shame on me for not locking it. Dad helped tho, reported it to the police. we got a call some time (days?) later, to identify a bike fitting the same description. I didn't have the serial #, but at the police station, before showing it to me, the officer asked me if I could Identify anything else specific about the bike, I told him about the red bandana I had tied to the saddle clamp. the 3 of us went to go look & the thief had ripped the bandana off, but when we looked under the saddle, there was the remnant of my knot, tied tightly to the clamp. bingo, got my bike back

there are two bikes in our downtown that have been locked for weeks if not months. They appear to be a operational condition. I expect the owners are around but some life event has prevented their return. |

Resurrecting this thread from a few months ago…
I happened to see this same bike from the OP again. I was driving on the opposite end of town, several miles away from where I saw it in the OP. It was the same UNIVEGA, with the front basket and a yellow rain parka in it, and mismatched tires. Locked with the horseshoe lock, and the chain removed. No big deal. Just curious. Dan |
