What is the difference between bike fenders and bike mudguards?

What do we say in the united states?

The difference is basically an ocean.

Fenders protect you from tire splatter. Mudguards protect you from tyre splatter.

I've used both before so here is my opinion.... Full fenders are much better for somebody who rides all year round in all weather conditions. Fenders offer a much better protection from getting sprayed with road grime...Mud guards are just little pieces of plastic that clips on to your seat post and are useless for anybody who rides all year round especially in winter.

Fenders protect your gunwales from the quay.

Not useless for those of us who ride all year round especially in winter and deal with mud, not just water. I will gladly trade the added load of five ounces of plastic for not having my saddle bag, saddle, backside and helmet plastered with mud each ride. Full fenders are useless for me, because they will quickly clog up and bring me to a halt.
