People throw bicycles in the water around the world!

Jody Rosen, author of 2 wheels good, a history of bicycles, reports on people throwing bicycles into rivers, in Rome, China, Amsterdam, NYC. Amsterdam has a squad dedicated to fishing them out of canals. Today's All things considered

Pretty interesting. I remember wondering what all might be found underwater when walking around in Paris. I'm sure they do cleanups periodically and find plenty of bikes to recycle when they do.

They throw a lot of other stuff in water too. What is so surprising?

Seems this was also in the news 15 or 20 years ago. Maybe some other city in Europe, maybe it wasn't bikes.

Not surprising.

A few years ago they had to lower the water on the local river to work on one of the dams. All sorts of bikes could be seen laying in the riverbed.
