Somewhere on another forum…

“When will I ever learn”

Out for a ride today on the bike trails. I got a flat and was walking back. I meet up with a guy on a trike. He offers to fix it for me. I only had 5 more miles to go, but I said yes. Ruined my weekend.

Years ago while riding with a friend, we encountered a cyclist that had a flat tire. He had no tools or a spare tube. When asked why, he replied by saying that he did not want the extra weight. My friend said now you will have a different weight, it is called wait.

The way I am looking at his latest post. Rydabent was the kind of person to yell at clouds however he is now yelling at fictional clouds.

I've been known to walk 10 miles for fun.

Okay, but - in cleats?

It depends on how much the cloud cost.

It’s always been there. Might be more obvious now, but our culture has been bred with a disadvantaged underdog prevailing over a privileged opponent.

I doubt few people were rooting against the Cutters. Or for Happy Gilmore’s Grandma to lose her home.

Blutarsky getting the girl and becoming a Senator, while Niedermeyer is killed by his own troops is a classic.

OK so there's been a few of these weird morality of not bringing tubes threads, and I've always ended up siding with the "bring tubes" people because there's always some joker posting about how he doesn't need to because he has, unlike other losers, people who will pick him up if he has a blow out, implying if not outright saying that it's our paucity of human relationships that makes it necessary to be self-sufficient. This thread is the flip side--the guy took a calculated risk, and he's walking his own way out of the problem. Cleats or not, I don't see that as irrational. .

So I rode.

Was it an honorable discharge?

I once rode 6,000 miles on tour one summer without a cell phone and the internet. The following year I did two 7 week, solo tours without one. Never needed a rescue.

You are forgetting one minor (perhaps even irrelevant) point: The scenario was entirely within his imagination. The only thing absent from the usual schtick was some reference to the superiority of recumbents.

There are three bikes that exceed $5k per, heck I probably have 17 or 18k in all three of them. Show me what you think a 5k bike looks like

I'm still bemused that I got the total cost of a couple $1,000 bikes up to over $2,500. I'm guessing SON hubs and dyno lights help; but how to you get the cost of a Surly bike over five grand?

That/s exactly the type of cyclists who don't deserve help. Let them walk.

Yup. Agree with this.

Walking that bike 10 miles is worse than carrying a little extra weigh.

That the other cyclist was riding with his head looking down at the front wheel, thus not seeing the pothole or whatever other hazard caused the flat, instead of looking forward in the more-relaxed natural posture of a recumbent rider, is assumed.

Barry2 08-22-22 03:43 PM

I don't care what kind of cyclist they are. If I've got the stuff, I'm stopping to help.
Well, unless it a recumbent or a mountain bike!

:)

Well chances are very likely that they were fictional miles so that’s not so bad. In fact I would prefer walking a fictional 10 miles than actually having to fix a flat so that rider probably came out ahead.

I've given away inner tubes to complete strangers, also CO2, and helped with the repairs. Once even did it for another rider in the middle of a gravel race -- guy had botched his first attempt and was out of inflation. Why pass up an opportunity to make a new friend and put a little positive Karma into the Universe?

PS: I'm STILL waiting for rydabent to show me an example of a bike with 36+ gears, which was something else he ranted about in another thread. Maybe he'll show it to us right after explaining how he knows how far this irresponsible cyclist had walked and was going to walk.

I usually offer help to folks, I was at the grocery store recently and there was a younger lady and her baby asking for help, I walked around trying to figure out something to get them because I don't like to give straight cash and I also didn't have any cash and didn't want to get any so I bought her a big pack of wipes knowing if she said no I have a friend with a 3mo old I could give them to but she was happy to have them and I wished her my best.

On rides I usually stop and ask and most people say no but I have helped folks in the past and do it all the time at the shop if there is an issue I can see and it won't be a huge fix I will just give it to them and send them safely on their way. In some cases if I know I cannot help I might pass someone by but I won't stop and ask them questions I will keep going but usually those are rare situations usually because I have to be somewhere or I am having issues of my own.

As far as 36+ gears that is easy (though I haven't built any bikes or seen this in real life)
SRAM DD3 hub which is 3 speed IGH with a freehub so lets say we swap that for a 11 speed HG freehub and then add a Pinon P.18 at the front with a double chainring (probably using a fat bike front derailleur or something) and you have 1188 gears. However let's just be more realistic a Rohloff 14 speed IGH and Pinion P.18 is 252 gears and wouldn't be hard to do or skip the double at the front and use a mountain bike 11 speed cassette which can work on a 10 speed freehub and still you have a ridiculous amount of gears. Also Sun Race which own the Sturmey Archer name makes a similar hub but I don't think it handles 10 speeds and it not as nice as the DD3 but is still in production.

Have you figured in the price of a Berthoud saddle and the Rene Herse tires?
