Comrad alanbikehouston I hate to break it to you, but you are already bending your "principles". In your own post you said you will buy stuff made in China if there is no alternative. So what is the point of this thread? You broke your own principles before, so quit whinning that you have to do it again to make the kid happy.
Also about those BMX bikes. Everytime I see a kid ridding one of those 9 out of 10 times the bike is too small/seat too low, so the kid is on a path to knee problems when he gets older.

Personally, I think would benefit your kid much more if you boycotted some American companies instead of China. Specifically Kraft, Nabisco, and all their related companies.

The thrift stores are full of wonderful old bikes, I was eyeing a lovely old Peugeot today, not a Chinese part in sight. It was too big for me though. And the early BMX bikes were US made, they were invented in the US and we had to make them here. So haunt the thrift stores and Ebay, and you can find what you need.

^Very true...communism doesn't exist there anymore. They are more like a slightly-more-liberal capitalist society now. Free enterprise has exploded there, and bajillions of Chinese people (more and more common workers now in fact) are buying cars. LOTS of cars. The old "I won't buy from Communists" mindset doesn't work anymore, unless its made in North Korea (which its not).

You'd be hard pressed to find a bike made in China over $250. Every bike I have is from Taiwan, which is not China, even my Mongoose Rockadile mountain bike. Also, I believe low-end Cannondales and Treks are made in Taiwan, and only the really expensive ones are made in the US.

EDIT AGAIN: Chinese cars are next. Check out Geely's website. They can undercut the Korean manufacturers (Kia, Hyundai) in price by several thousand dollars.

Plus, if you buy a GM manufactured car, there's a good chance it's made in Mexico because Unions have demanded so much that companies can't actually make a profit or compete anymore.

Even "Made in the U.S.A." stuff is mostly made in Ireland and ASSEMBLED in the US.

That way your money is not going out of the country, you are not paying sales tax if applicable, and you are likely to get a lot more bike for your money.

Unless its more than 20 years old, a used bike is still going to be made overseas.

wow thats pretty rigid. I dont know if I honestly (no offense) could deal with that. My dad listens to me alot, and everything works out great. Anywho about the bike, Its really hard to explain the concept of gears. Like people are like wow 27 gears I dont need that, but really if you think about it you dont use all of them. But I mean I shouldnt get into it because its a whole thing.
