I don't think these terms are synonyms. "Saddle" is just more specific--it's a type of seat that you straddle.

Just came across a post in an old thread that included a photo of an old Holdsworthy Co. ad touting the Alan aluminum frames that they were importing: they referred to the frame as requiring a custom Campagnolo "saddle stem" to fit the frame's "saddle cluster."
