Do you wave at eBike riders?

I assume that most cyclists do say hello, wave, or nod to other passing cyclists, but not to motorcycle or moped riders.

The conundrum is, should one do so to eBike riders?

Are they in the pedal-cycle class, or the moped, or motorised pedal-cycle class?

Or should it be nothing to do with class, but whether they're passing slowly enough that a mutual friendly acknowledgement is possible?

Sure. It's the courteous thing to do and it lets that other person know that you aren't daydreaming and oblivious to all else. Though it might not be a wave, just a nod of the head or lifting of the fingers from the bar or hoods (not just the middle finger <grin>).

Some e-bikes today I don't recognize as e-bikes until I pass by. Sometimes not even then since the bicycle another is riding isn't really a concern of mine.

Too many people in my area riding all kinds of bicycles. Nothing unusual or unique when you someone on a BSO of any type, from a cheapie kids bicycle to a beach cruiser to a hybrid to an MTB to a road bike to an e-bike.

if i'm not paying attention to potholes. but then there are those careless drivers... also the random areas riddled with puncture tire debris... don't forget the aimlessly wandering ped... sometimes the pesky glare from the sun inhibits a good visual, so to play it same, i'll maintain keeping it a safe ride until the all is clear.

what was the question? I like pie!

I mostly don't wave at anyone, because there are so many cyclists here that I'd have my hands off the bars too much.

If we start waving to e-bike riders, what's next? Waving at motorcycle riders? Car drivers? Truck drivers?!?!?

It's a slippery slope.

I haven't yet passed an ebike, but have been passed by a couple as I ground up a hill. They didn't announce themselves, but I waved anyway, with one finger.

Kidding! Community of cyclists, etc. Ya never know, I might need a jump-start some day...

If I were to wave at riders I see while out on a ride my waving arm would develop huge muscles. I live in a place where I see dozens upon dozens of other cyclists on any ride. I might see someone I think that I know or possibly should know. I live in a cycling hotspot, the Canadian province of Quebec. Last year's Tour de France featured 4 Canadian riders. Three of them were born in Quebec. The fourth, Mike Woods was born in Ottawa, just across the river from Quebec, and his current home is in Chelsea in the province of Quebec

It"s a thankless job, for sure. Be nice if folks weren't too lazy to find the right place for their threads.

in the (large) Canadian city I live in, the vast majority of e-riders I see are food delivery jockeys and I detest most of them. Total free-for all, dangerously weaving through the bike lanes, no idea of bike laws/rules or etiquette. I really get hot under the collar when one bypasses the line at a red light - motives me to out-drag them and get back in front. They're supposed to be speed-governed to 32km/hr, but clearly many have figured out a way to remove the limiter. Worst are e-mopeds that ride in the bike lanes. In my mind e-bikes should only be ridden by someone with a physical need i.e. recovering from an injury/living with a disability or old (65+ years age. I must be getting to the grumpy old man stage in life...

The only cyclists I won't wave at, are those who ride on the wrong side of the road, coming toward me. Around here, some do that, yet the state law for bikes classes them as vehicles, and must obey the same laws, except for riding on the sidewalks which is legal here. So, all cyclists must ride on the right on the roads, but some of them don't have a clue about bicycle laws. They just go as though they're the only ones around.

Why wave at anyone? Do you wave at other automobile drivers when you pass them going the other way? If you think about how odd that would be, then you should apply it to all situations. It is like the people who eat pigs and cows all day every day but won't eat dogs or cats, they have closed, biased minds. Motorcyclists do the same weird thing, wave at each other because they are both on motorcycles. Hey, I have pants on, should I wave at everyone I walk past who also has pants? Or who has some teeth left?

It is hilarious that e-bikers think they are "cyclists", when in reality they are motor-vehicle operators, no different than those driving automobiles or operating motorcycles, except for some reason they do not need a vehicle title, safety inspection, insurance or registration. A Tesla automobile, an E-car, needs all that legal stuff to be on the road, but if it has two wheels it does not ??? There are a thousand slobs running around my city on e-bikes, bicycles with little two-stroke engines, and even gas-powered mini-bikes every-day, all day. If they are having fun or getting somewhere they need to be great, but if they wave to me when I am on a bicycle because they think they have something in common with me, they can go to ache-eee-double-toothpicks.

Well I have waved at other car drivers, before and after they did. Usually in remote or lonely places.
Still remember hwy 50 in 1977 I think, going east from Carson City. Most of the 10 or so drivers waved. LOL.
From what I have seen, Ebike riders are 99% jerks. LOL. NO chance I will wave at them.

I will have to inform my wife (a former century rider on her old Cannondale racing bike) and a good friend’s wife that rode the entire west coast of the US. Both have severe rheumatoid arthritis now. I am sure they will be quite pleased to hear your thoughtful comment.
