Bike Shop Inflation Nightmare...

Literally.

I had a nightmare last night where I took my bike into my old shop--still run by the family who used to run it back in the 1980s--and asked them to "upgrade" my bike. Presumably I wanted all-new parts. I asked them to "do it right," no matter the expense, suggesting they didn't do it right the last time.

When I went to pick it up, I was handed the bill: $36,000. Not itemized, so I'm not sure what I got for that amount, but I did notice that they did wrap the bars with dual rolls of tape in a red-and-white pattern. I wrote the check without question--sounds like something stupid I'd do. The wife was NOT happy, and told me to just have them re-do the bike as it was, and get my money back. The shop was NOT happy. Then they explained to me that they had already sold off all my old components. Then I wasn't happy.

Woke up in a cold sweat. I have an active dream life.

Oh jeez, now people are trying to dream up fake stories about local bike shops to make them sound bad...

D minus, sorry. In a real dream they'd have been working on your bike in an ice cream shop and it would have been a grade school teacher telling you to take it back.

Probably. I think my son's college tuition is wrapped up in there somewhere too.

A dog bit me while I was riding yesterday. That probably caused some psychic disruption worldwide.

is this canyon negatively astroturfing for LBS?

The worse was maybe 6 years ago when I brought in some parts into a job to upgrade my bike and the manager at the time told me he would need to charge me a fee for not buying the bike through their job and bringing in my own parts. I understand buying parts from a LBS supports the business and then they can directly warranty those parts but the problem is most parts never have the exact parts you need and they are always more expensive. I think now with direct to consumer brands and the industry being more competitive there wouldn't be a shop that would dare to do this.

That was a reality in Zimbabwe. Over a short period of time, a set of tires for a Mamba bicycle went from 100,000 Zimbabwean dollars to more than a billion, and eventually more than a trillion.

I was trying to tell myself I could get several very nice bikes for that amount. But I wrote the check anyway (not that I could ever write a check for that amount. Who writes a check at the bike store anyway?). And I work on my own bike!

Isn’t there a debate over in C&V between brass and silver solder to keep people entertained.

It’s always easier to comment on the entertainment value of someone else’s thread than to create an entertaining thread of one’s own.

I recently had the college dream that I couldn't find my classroom. The nightmare seemed to go on for hours, walking the hallways and asking for help. The atmosphere was thick with failure and despair and I didn't really sleep afterwards. Ack.

Reminds me of the thread asking about any really noticeable differences between Dura-Ace and Ultegra that degenerated into a debate over the meaning of "money is no object."

It doesn’t exist in it’s 1980s incarnation anymore.

BTW, my son goes to your namesake school.
