That's how I do it (for the road bike I don't need to remove the wheel, but for the hybrid I do), but I never considered this. My car is smaller than a Camry, though, and I'm pretty sure my bike simply wouldn't fit.

I don't see the point in buying a rack if the bike fits in the car (especially since it's usually not even once a year that I need to transport my bike), plus if I owned a rack my friend would want us to tote her tandem places and... I do not want to put a tandem on my car.

For years I've hauled my bikes on a Saris Bones 2 trunk mounted rack. I recently got a Civic Hatchback and the rack is not going to be a good option for the hatchback. I'm sure I can probably fold the rear seats and put the bike in back possibly intact or at the minimum with the front wheel removed But my ego is sure the driver behind me likes looking at my bike n the rack thinking they would rather be going where I am than to where they are headed.
