Spray-on Pledge furniture polish. Makes bike shiny. Makes bike smell fresh with lemon scent. Makes bike go fast in snow.

Pledge is junk wax, it's made for wood that is going to be used indoors, it is not made for painted metal for use outdoors.

Wax creates a water beading, high-gloss, and transparent basic shield against damage from the elements. Salts and chemicals from the road, moisture, dust, or contaminants from muddy trails will ruthlessly attack your bike’s paint and metal, the frame is also exposed to UV rays that can cause damage over time. Waxing can make cleaning the bike easier, the protective layer created by the wax repels dirt and grime, making it easier to wipe away. And the wax will make the bike a bit more slippery for slicing through the wind, not sure how many watts it can save, but watts are watts. Wax can help keep you bike rust free, and help prevent the paint and the decals from fading.

You also should not use bicycle specific boutique waxes; they are far too expensive. Get a good non-abrasive car wax which is a lot more durable than Pledge or bike specific boutique waxes. I now use Meguiars Ceramic Hybrid spray on wax, it makes paint look brand new, and it's non-abrasive. The Meguiars goes on very easy and wipes off very easy, it's a fast on and off application.

I guess it depends on what you want. Waxing at all could be considered overkill. Worrying about "junk wax" is definitely overkill. I don't take my bike to bike shows. 10 years, looks fine, gets filthy, gets washed every few weeks, gets a passing shot of pledge to shine it a bit, back out to get dirty. These are outdoor toys. I haven't seen any "ruthless attack upon my paint an metal," but, heck, it's only been 10 years, so perhaps the ruthless attack is just around the corner.

The only time I polish with paint-friendly compound is when I am prepping a bike for resale and photos.

I have never waxed a bike, I probably would if I rode more in the rain/slush.

I don't polish my own bikes and beaters. Wash them, yes. I just don't want them shiny and resale ready for a theif.

The inside: that's where the frame doesn't get painted. Maybe the seat tube shouldn't due to the saddle seat post.

It may not be a metal bike but it still gets auto wax along with the deep profile rims. Excessive? You bet.

If I lived in Canada as opposed to only visiting Portland OR for a month or less every year and the bulk of my riding in Southern AZ year around with the Bighorn Mtns of WY a couple of months in the summer I would for sure treat the interior of my tubes in the Italian and custom steel frames.
